406 diesel estate (1998) with no blowers

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 diesel estate (1998) with no blowers

Post by PiMuRho »

Hello,

I just bought myself an R-plated 406 with 59,000 miles, but there's an issue with it (okay, more than one, but this is the main one) in that the blowers don't work. The control panel for the climate control works quite happily (although the temperature display on the MFD says "--") but no air comes out and the resultant lack of visibility is rendering the car undrivable.
If I switch between the various modes, I can hear something going on, but no fan noise. I've checked the fuses and they seem okay, so where do I go from here?

Hi mate,
Pretty common fault as the resistor is probably fubar'd.

If you can grab a replacement from a local breaker its a 2 minute change.

I still have the spare for my old D8, where abouts are you?

The missing temp display is a different issue.
The outside temp sensor is fitted on the underside of the passenger wing mirror. If the display is showing "--" that indicates an open circuit. The wiring to mine got trapped in the door check strap a few years ago and severed one of the two wires from it. A simple fix....but yours may be something else of course!

I'm in Preston, so not all that close really. I could cover postage costs?

Thanks for the replies, I'm trying to get it up and running properly ASAP. The temperature sensor I can cope without, I wanted to make sure it wasn't related.

before replacing the blower, check the black/ash color power connecter of the blower.

You will find it behind the glove box compartment which can be reached from passenger side without removing the glove box.

There are plenty threads on blower motor failure most of them pointing to the motor control module which is sometimes referred to as a resistor.
Don't attempt to remove the blower motor until you are sure what motor control module your blower motor is using..
One is directly attached to the blower motor body and looks like this...

the other is separate and is in a recess on the passenger side floor well held by a small screw and looks like this.

After some delving, it seems that I don't have the green connector resistor pack, so I must have the other type. I'm buggered if I can see where it is, though. Any pointers?

I've ordered a replacement resistor pack, and removed the blower from under the dashboard in preparation. I noticed while doing so that this had done before, as one of the three screws was missing. The screws holding the resistor pack in had been previously removed too. I'm seeing this as a good sign.

I also tested, and there's 14.5 volts getting to the blower assembly, so that helps too.

All sorted now. The resistor pack did the trick, and I can now demist my windscreen (and have heat!)
Thanks for the help, guys. Much appreciated.
