Electric window didn't go up

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Electric window didn't go up

Post by FarmerPug »

I put the window down last night, and when i went to put it back up it refused, i drove out to the farm and put it in the shed, the motor clicked but did not move the glass up, i pulled off the outer window rubber trim and this seemed to get the window to go up. Im noticing that when the window is half way up and stopped if its pulled it does move about an inch more by hand, whereas the passenger windows if the same is done does not do this.

Ive got two sets of spare window mechanisms lying about but i wonder can this one be fixed, what part breaks on them?

If your bored, just strip it down
it couid be acable issue or the main cog might be chewed up, on some psa ones they are plastic,
ive never stripped a 406 one down ive done some citreon ones, you can get all the bits off ebay to repair them,

but cheaper option is just to grab one from scrappy 10-15quid,

When i had the door stripped last week i got a look at the window, there is a green plastic roller at the top of the mechanism and the cable had slipped off, i bent two pieces of coat hanger into hooks and sorted the cable out.

The problem now is that the window goes up on the one touch function but when it closes it goes back down about an inch, and the button has to be manually used to bring it to the top.

How does the window know when its at the top, does it need to be reprogrammed to set the one touch feature at the top of its travel?

Try taking the window down and hold the switch down for a few seconds then take it up and hold the switch up for a few seconds.

Some cars reset the windows like this.

I gave it a go, unfortunately if i take the window up to the top on the one touch function it drops down an inch after a few secs, even if i bring it up on the non one touch setting and try to click one touch up once its up it goes back down an inch.

The window doesn't use some sort of current draw reading to judge when its went up fully?

These windows have an 'anti trap' thing to stop the window chopping your hand/head off if the window was closing (cos we all do that don't we?) when it stops against an object it 'backs off' by and inch or so. It sounds like the window motor thinks somethings trapped but I've no idea how this works (something in the motor maybe?).

That it moved down from the top sounds like the anti-pinch needs re-calibrating.

You know how after you've disconnected the battery the drivers window only goes up a couple of inches at a time?
Well that's what calibrates the anti-pinch.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Thanks rwb, i took out the battery and recalibrated the window it has sorted the problem.
I had a spare mechanism sitting ready to be put into the car but if this one works there is no need :cheesy:

I had this on that Senator, there was a sticky for it on the Autobahnstormers forum because it was quite common on the big Vauxhalls. As the temperature drops the rubber stiffens, it doesn't compress as much as when it was warm and it's just enough to trip the anti-pinch, so the window motor needs to relearn the point at which it should be closed.

If the window is open when the battery is disconnected it unlearns the fully open and closed positions, then it has to be taught them again by being fully closed with the button held and fully open with the button held. It'd probably be easier to pull the fuse though, then you don't have to do the battery disconnect/reconnect hokey-kokey.
