There seems to be something odd about diesel 307 fuel consumption - none of them seem to be all that good. Known a few people with early 2.0 110 HDi's which ought to have been good on long, mostly motorway commutes, but neither ever bettered 44/45 mpg. Another chap I know with a 2.0 90 gets less, though mostly on shorter runs.

Friend of my bro's has just got rid of a 1.6 HDi - he was getting nearer 50, mostly round town. He started having impending dpf doom worries, so has replaced it with an early Rover (nee Perkins) engined Freeloader, "to pull the caravan". Luck with that.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

You don't I.M.H.O want a diesel car if your journeys are 10 miles or shorter
We have a petrol for the wife school run's, shopping, ect.
My 406 is used for me to go to & from work & trip's out.
Just for the record I get 48 mpg week by week in the summer & down to 44mpg in the winter all on A & B roads with a little town work thrown in (15%)
up to low 50's maybe 55 if I can keep it at about 55-60 mph on a run on the motorway
but most of the time I get bored with that  , prefer to cruise @ 75ish.
Oh & when we have used it round town only my mpg's drop to 38-40.
But you only have to put you instant mpg's up to see why, it's all the stopping & starting mine can drop to 15mpg even on gentle exceleration :(
but when on steady cruising can sit a 55-60 :P

For what it's worth, my old 2.1 12 valve D8 still returns low 50's per gallon. With my last job I travelled 45000 miles per year and we had to keep accurate mileage and fuel records. On the motorways I would regularly get high 50's and low 60's. On one occasion I got 68mpg on a run from Cirencester to Harrogate and back.
So much for technical advances in modern engines.

Indeed, I still reckon the 2.1 was the best all-rounder, at the end of the day, when all's said and done, taking everything into account, moving forward.
