Can someone tell me what economy figures I should be getting from a 2.2 hdi136? We're seeing dreadful numbers on the citroen, Below 30mpg round town and 38mpg on a motorway run which my petrol V8 could do if my right foot weren't so heavy. For comparison, our hdi90 managed 45mpg around town and 50-60mpg on the motorway...
I've had the Lexia hooked up to it and there's no faults showing which could be attributable, injector corrections are -1 to +2, and the FAP looks to be in good condition with the last regeneration being about a fortnight ago. The engine is nice and smooth, with no issues driving - apart from horrific turbo lag and lack of boost at low revs (under 1500rpm)

That's far below what it should be. Mine is on the standard 136bhp map and managed 50.5mpg on a 100 mile motorway run yesterday. Around town it does maybe 40mpg, and over the last 3000 miles of combined driving it's on 44.9mpg.
Combined with lack of boost but no EML, I'd suspect your MAF sensor.

Jon tends to get a few more mpg than me - the best I've ever had on a run is about 48. My normal use is around 300 miles a week main road motorway and 100 round town / short runs typical winter mpg about 43, summer 45. If I have a week off and only do the short runs, I get something just under 40.
It's not an auto is it?
Are your air/fuel filters recent?
Your injector corrections should ideally be within +/- 1%, some cleaner can't hurt.
Maybe someone nearby can lend you a 2.2 MAF for elimination?

My Uncles C5 would struggle to get 40mpg. Same as my car when it was standard.
The C5 is a big old bus!

Going to give it an oil/filter service soon. It's due one in 8000 miles according to the instrument cluster, but bringing it forwards a bit and giving me a chance to get to know it mechanically can only be a good idea. Just got to get rid of the hdi90 sitting in the garage first...

Forte Injector Cleaner is a good start, and a tank of 'nice' Diesel.
Can we clean the MAF on the 406? a sympathetic squirtage with Carb Cleaner, allow to dry, do not touch sensor, Gas Mark 4 for 20 mins....
I think that sort of car would be better off without all the emissions crap, EGR, DPF etc. how much more heavy is a C5 over a 406? it could be like driving a loaded-up 406 all the time?

The 2.2HDi MAF is different to the 2.0s unfortunately. New ones are £lots, but hopefully you can borrow a known working one.
Personally I wouldn't attempt to clean it unless you have another to hand or can afford to replace it, they're notoriously sensitive devices. But if you feel like giving it a go then let us know how you get on!
Recommend Millers Ecomax if you're going to stick some injector cleaner in, mine is definitely running better after having used it at double strength for the last few tanks.

I was always warned off using Pattern sensors and always go OE. Lambda sensors are another case where OE is best, some of these crappy makes can destroy your fuel economy etc.

If there's no 2.2 owners around the area offering use of their MAF for a bit, I'll try a drive after disconnecting the existing one and if it's not too different/bad I'll try cleaning it.

You want some Ambersil I.P.A solvet aerosol spray for that, thats what I used on mine & all the cars I've had where I've cleaned the MAF .
search for it on ebay, it's ment for cleaning electrical components, just spray it on (gently not to close) to rinse off the gunk & allow to air dry.
Do not wipe, as this can damage it ( it dry's off very quickly anyway ).
