Even a bicycle? :P I not getting far short of that from the yoyo and that mostly does shopping runs & wife to and from work 4km away, and you know how fuel-efficient and aerodynamic that is. Plus even in the depths of winter it reaches its operating temperature on these short runs, unlike the diesel Pug which has scarcely warmed up by the time I get home again, doing god knows what harm to the engine...

Ive had my 2000 2.0 HDi Estate for just over 3 years (Had 405 1.9TD befiore) soon after I bought it I fitted a box that goes between the harness for the fuel rail this made a massive difference a lot more torque from as low as 1800 rpm & I get a minimum of 45 and as good as 65mpg. The funny thing is I paid £80 for it the same company now charge £250 for the same box so would take a while to pay for itself. Iain

Have you done anything I mentioned previously?
Personally I would ensure you have 4 good tyres, preferably matched across each axle and correctly balenced.
Ensure the geometry is cock on! Even if it's out slightly it can massively increase fuel consumption and reduce tyre life.
Get the gearbox oil changed, something often overlooked. This is a must ecspcially with an auto!
Engine oil should be replaced every 6,000miles/6months. Look to change to 5w40/5w30 fully synthetic.
Look into disabling the EGR Valve and clean out the inlet manifold and ports.
Decat would help improve economy also! You could probably get the standard CAT "gutted" FOC by an exhaust fabricator due to the value of the cat itself!
Look to use better quality diesels. Generally avoid supermarket fuel and maybe try some premium diesel like BP Ultimate!
Get a decent injector cleaner through the system. BG244 is a cracking cleaner! If you want something more concentrated the liquimoly diesel purge is great stuff but needs to be used neat. Have a google!
After all this, look to get an economy/mild stage one remap. Obviously you don't want to stress the auto box too much!

That is pants....
Even Doggy and I with our ' enhanced ' 2.2Hdis get 40mpg round town.

I would start to suspect a fuel leak and binding brakes with that low mpg.....

Bailes advice is pretty good - most of which are not that expensive to do.

dave406,
Are you working this out by litres used / triping the millage or are you going on the fuel computer, there notoriously inacurate  .
I get about 35-38 mpg if just driven round town, but as others have said this is the wrong car for that.
I average 45mpg in the winter months mixed driving & up to 51mpg in the summer months :cheesy: .
I'm going to be trying a EGR delete & air doser delete coupled to a re-map soon so I'll post up my findings 8)
