really bad mpg

Hi I have recently bought a 1998 1.9lxtd 406 which is a really good car except im only getting 18-21 mpg even with long runs can anyone help

Use the primer bulb to pressurise the fuel system.
Have a look around for fuel leaks, mainly look at the leak off pipes on the injectors as these are common to perish!

Thanks but I have discovered there is no pipe on the bottom of the air box I dnt know if that has anything to do with it but il try your suggestion when I get home

Not entirely sure what you mean by no air box piping, can you post a pic? the airbox just pushes into the pipe.

I used to get 37 round town from my non-aircon 1.9, 34 from my aircon model, slightly less in the winter.
As stated check for fuel leaks, oil and filter change, fuel and air filters, injector cleaner, clean the intercooler, 34 PSI in your tyres, check brakes for binding, handbrake cables can wear and stick on. Wheel alignment can effect MPG's but 18-21 is massively below where you should be.
Does it run ok? tickover RPM's? lumpy idle?

Hi I mean at the bottom of the air box theres just a hole il b getting it serviced nxt week hopefully I have a sneaking suspicion that the car might be screwed at the pump as there is plenty of black smoke wen u accelerate

A boost leak seems likely to me.

+1, on that Doggy.
Could be well worth while checking the boost pipe seal's ,o-rings I.I.R.C & the hole in the bottom of your airbox sounds like someone has removed the air intake pipe. A common mod :roll: , to help stop sucking up floodwater :cheesy: .
