As some of you may know I've been doing a bit of research and tinkering with the vacuum system on my car, low vacuum to the turbo at sub boost RPM's can give poor economy.

Only applies to 2.2's, I suspect - fixed geometry 110's typically show 1200 mb absolute, at tickover.

Mine states that I'm getting 38mpg but I'm using 70 litres per 735-750 miles,I make that 48-50mpg. I also read quite a few other post's where people have stated that they get much better economy than the computer would suggest.

500 miles..? How much diesel did you put in - I only get 500 miles from £75.
£75 is around 55 litres - 9 miles per litre. 4.5 litres to a gallon so 4.5 x 9 = 40.5mpg.
The trip computer is not an accurate measurement, its just a guide.

According to my calculations, £90 is about 14 gallons.
500 miles on 14 gallons is 35mpg.

Its not bad at all - for an auto.. 8)

This can only go up in the summer with eco driving and previously discussed methods. You may even reach 38 - 40mpg.

Dave, sounds to me like the computer is leading you astray a bit, you need to calculate it manually to see if there's really anything to worry about. Have you got a smartphone? If so get a fuel usage app. The one I use on my Android phone is called Fuel Log, but there are plenty out there. After a couple of fill-ups you'll know exactly what's going on

At root, you've got the wrong car for lots of town driving.... largeish, heavyish, 2 litres, diesel, auto....

A car for towns... is a TOWN CAR.. Smallish, no more than than 1300cc, petrol....
