I've heard this too. It would make sense as the quality is really excellent :D

I've got Snap-on sockets, Bluepoint spanners from my days as an Hgv Fitter and the quality of the Halfords stuff feels about the same. However i know nothing about there other stuff, Jacks etc but i dont think they are from the 'Professional' range are they ?? I assume there just made by 'someone' not necessarily a good named brand.
I have also heard that Snap-on make Halfords Sockets/spanners as well.

Oh and even snap-on arent infalible, Ive snapped there spanners in the past  Not using them as intended but snapped all the same

Halfords tools, used to be linked with snapon,
but not anymore,(have alook on google)

Bahco is the closest you will get ibelieve they was here before snap-on and snap-on took over, (wiki)

As for buying tool's.you dont go out and buy them all in one go,build them up,

nowt wrong with secound hand either, carboot sale's.or ex army surplus stores- theres one in everyother town,

Ihave alot of tool's for home use passed down from my dad, early 80s stuff its outlived alot of the Modern stuff,
ilet my son's use them now as iknow they wont break them,

The first real tools I bought, about 35 years ago, was a Metrinch socket set, made up of ....

1/2" ratchet drive
10 sockets
2 x spark plug sockets
5" extension bar.

Still have it, all works.., everything else came along as needed.

Not certain, but think you'll find that Elora these days brings in its tools from Asia.
I used to live a mile down the road from Drapers HQ near Southampton. As the avalanche of
cheap stuff started coming in from China, I recall Drapers sacking loads of people, and basically
just becoming a brand name for imports/distribution. Much the same happened, if they didn't
go bust, to lots of well known tool manufacturers... Brittool, Sealey, Hilka...

Although Germany has the reputation for manufacturing, from what I can gather, there are rather
few handtools made there now. Except for the very high end stuff... Stahlwille.

good point,
so that just goes to show,we dont know what we are getting with the Modern tools,
if its made in asia,it will be made fast on production line, and cheapest possible materials, for them to make it worth while
working for 25pence an hour,

Like it or not, most tools that don't have stratospheric prices now come from Asia.
And new outfits that started off as straight importers of cheapo stuff.., do want to have
a long term future... eg Rolson, Neilsen , some of Am-Tech..., sell some decent stuff at the
budget end of the market.

I really like teng tools sockets, I have a 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive set, the 1/2 drive gets the most abuse at taking off stubborn rusty bolts, I've beat the sockets onto old rusty bolts with a hammer and its amazing how well they stand up to it, there are 3 places fairly close by who stock teng stuff so the lifetime warranty actually works. In fact i bought a used teng ratchet from a car boot sale, took it to the stockist saying the switch was broken they took it and a few weeks later i had the ratchet fixed up for free :cheesy:

As for ratchet spanners i have a bergen set that cost £40, they dont have a warranty but they do work quite well, although most of the time i still prefer to use the 1/4 ratchet.
