All he says is that the screen now remains cold to the touch and that his display is better! They're self adhesive heatsinks btw. You'd have to hope that the adhesive is good at conducting heat!PeterN wrote:Brilliant job, I see they have added some extra ventilation as well, are they just stuck on with heat sink compound, - does it work? My word this is getting complicated - how about a peltier cooler?

Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
I did something simular today.....
(Well I emulated markw's excellent guide on the coupe forum): http://www.406coupeclub.org/PHPBB3/view ... =5&t=46725
Before

Heatsinks applied

Picked up the fan supply from the PCB. This pic's really unclear, but the rightmost two through-plated holes are the switched 12V, from pins 7 & 8 on the connnector.

Fitting a fuse seemed sensible, (best I had knocking about was a 160 mA anti-surge). This is intended to protect the display/car systems in the event of the fan developing a short.
Here's the completed unit ready to reinstall.

The fan is audible with the engine and radio off, but otherwise you'd never notice. It runs while the ignition key is on or in the accessories position and for about a minute after you take the keys out, but only draws 80 mA, so it's not going to drain your battery.
I used the same 30 x 30 fan http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/ram-chip-memo ... sink-a36gf
and heatsinks http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/ram-chip-memo ... sink-a36gf
as mark.
If you're interested in trying this, take the time to read his write-up, (it's much better than mine).

WAY to modest, you are. I think your 'power from pcb 'method an excellent idea too.

Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
I don't even know why I'm looking at this
Looks a very neat job anyway. I noticed on Mark's thread that he says the fan is sucking air through the thing, umm, it's running backwards then
(Probably matters not a jot) I can't see it in the pics but is there enough air gaps around the, er, thing for the air to be sucked into it? Or are there some strategically placed holes now? Looks like he didn't find the live you did on the board and got his elsewhere, so I think you've improved it slightly...

Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
Look at the first pic above Steve, there are holes everywhere!
I believe extraction to be a better method of moving the air in there. Don't ask me for an explanation....I don't have one.
The fan's not running backwards, it just depends which way round you mount it!

Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
I can see 6 holes on the right and it looks like there's a gap around the connector
I suppose as I've got no way of ever seeing one the the fles..plastic I'll have to take your word for it. It was just an observation

Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
I did consider blowing air in rather than out - all you have to do is turn the fan over. (Running it backwards blows air in the same direction, just far less effectively).
The holes along the top of the casing suggest the designers were hoping it would cool itself by convection, (or were maybe added after the first complaints).
I plan to try it this way round for a while and maybe flip the fan over at some point, it wouldn't take long.

Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
This looks like a great idea, does it completely fix the screen though?
Re: Sat Nav / MFD Display
In my case, it was more of a preventative measure.
I had a brand new screen fitted by the dealer I bought my car from in 2007 as the original had a crack right across it. So I'm more fortunate than others who have slightly older screens to deal with.
I'm of the belief that cooler electronics are better than warmer electronics, so based on this, the mod can only be a good thing. I measured a 12°C internal drop on a test I did after completing my one.
