Toyota Yaris

My grandpas polo is getting on a bit and he was looking for something a bit fresher with less miles, initially the plan was to buy a DSG golf mk5, but given that my grandpa and granny have a tendency to batter cars a bit there was no point in spending so much on a car, so a yaris was bought instead, mainly because my aunt still has her red 5 door one and its been brilliant, very economical and no problems other than a bit of an accident in the ice which it survived.

The one my grandpa bought was a 2005 1.0 VVTI t-spirit with 36k on the clock for £2600, there are a few small dents and scratches, but its mechanically in good condition, although its already easy to run, the plan is to get it converted to LPG, here is some photos:







A nice tidy engine, and no silly plastic covers


They are a bit more expensive than the other small cars of the same age i.e. clios and micras but they do seem much better built and quite nice to drive, other than the absolute lack of power and torque it rides quite smoothly and is quiet and an enjoyable thing to drive, it doesn't really need to go fast it still feels good to drive.

Yes, this was THE best small car around for a few years until the Jazz came along. Still an excellent car that will last a while and keep its value.

More a Fiesta fan myself. The other half has a 2008 model with the 1.6 - absloute hoot to drive! More "Warm hatch" than a run of the mill shopping trolley!

That's expensive for a nearly 10 year old car but I suppose if they're good and reliable they must command a premium?

I mustard mitt my Post Delivering Operative has a T-reg Yaris, it looks battered but the engine sounds sweet.

I really wouldn't bother with the LPG on a 1.0 engine, unless they do massive mileages you'd never recoup the cost of the install IMO.

Unfortunatley today my grandpa had an accident in the car, he pulled out from a junction and had a collision with a golf. Both he and my granny were in the car but luckily they are not hurt, they were taken to hospital to be checked over but were ok. The person in the golf is also ok, and did not need to go to the hospital.

That's a pity but at least no-one was hurt. Considering the impact the front wheel is surprisingly straight.....

I don't think that scuff mark will polish out, so time to find another one..??

That's a shame, your gramps will be pretty shook up and annoyed about it. Sometimes it takes things like this to make senior drivers hang their keys up for good, I hope he can brush himself down and get back in the saddle asap....it's a shame you don't know anyone with a nice little hatchback available, say a Blue coloured one.......

I think this was a sign that my grandpa shouldn't be driving anymore, he had a bit of a knock a few years back in his polo and his driving is really atrocious he is 86 now, its not that he drives fast but at junctions he never looks left or right and just goes on ahead, and can get distracted very easily by things happening around him.
Its just a blessing no one was hurt and a message that its perhaps time to stop driving.

He did have a wedge shaped rover 216 before the polo, over here you knew to pull out of the way when one of them rovers was near.

Erk! I'm glad everyone was ok.

I think my dad is heading the same way, according to my brother his driving is getting scary. He'll be 81 next month and has been driving since he started work and before that he was a biker. I reckon it'll come as a big shock to him if they take his car away, having to rely on others or feeble public transport would be a real knock to his self-confidence.

This no-more-driving thing happened in our family about 10 years ago and the conclusion was that for what little use the car actually got it was cheaper to jump into Taxi's and not worry about parking, running costs etc. it worked out alright for them.
