What else should I salvage?

Post by dadooo »

Hello pugsters! Well as a newbie here I got a question. I bought the wife a 1997 406 estate 2.0 16v. It had 17 inch wheels and worn out tires. new tires would have costed close to the amount of the car (4000 sek 362 gbp). Now on my way home I saw a neighbor near by the likes to buy junkers and think about fixing them. In his collection was a 98 406 sedan diesel Image with a motor with bad rod bearings that he has had a few years . It had factory 15 inch alloys. Well I made a deal with him and bought it for the same price as scrappers pay (1000sek) . Had a set of 15 inch tires and now the estate rides and drives like a normal car and not a skateboard. pulled out the widow regulators and the sill moldings, a head rest, blower fan,and some miscellaneous trim details. The guy that had the estate sprayed a lot of trim-details with silver spray paint  .

So my Question is.....
What else should I salvage?

Backplates - the metal behind the rear discs, if they are decent then definitely have those.
Door catches/mechanisms, - Indicator / wiper stalks - headlights and fog lights too - make good spares.

Are you looking for parts to sell on to get some money back?
2003 2.2hdi estate - mine
1998 Volvo 940 auto estate - also mine
2019 Citroen C3 something - the wife's
PP2000 user, can help with faults / diagnostics in the Bournemouth area.

No fogs :(
A friend of mine said the was some diesel part that was real expensive and hard to find the diesel pump is a Lucas. so yes if I can part it out and get more than I would from scraping why not ... One catch I can't have it sitting around too long . Wife doesn't want more ornaments dressing up our parking

One thing's for sure, whatever you take off you will never need, anything you leave behind you will...

Doesn't this depend on how much space you have? As your wife's driving maybe you want to keep the front bumper, wings and doors...

Backplates, if they're any good. If you've had the blower motor you must be able to see the recirculation flap motor, these break and are rather expensive. Lucas pump and ecu. Column switches are quite cheap on those anyway. No trip computer as such, D8 diesels only do external temperature (sensor is in the door mirror...) Perhaps the ABS ECU. Turbocharger, if you fancy getting greasy. Generator. Ooh, over the glovebox are some electronic boxes, have them especially if it doesn't have a key pad (keep the fobs too) as well as the aerial around the "ignition" switch. Oh, and the ignition switch itself.

Btw can I see the edge of a headlamp washer cover there, or is the bumper cracked?

I'd whip out the climate control panel (if it has one), maybe the instrument binnacle, and any LCD displays might be handy.

Central locking motors would be good, electric window motors, main heater fan, radiator fan, relays etc.

Would you give it a wash for us? :cheesy: I'd buy you a virtual pint if you do.

yesterdays harvest.Image It was fun pulling out the power windows with out power :P but a battery charger and some trial and error got them down. The plastic under the window on the regulator broke :frown: but the motor itself I was able to unscrew. and the passenger side was a completely different set up . all metal no plastic. Another interest thing is when you start striping its kind of archaeology This car I believe that it was in an accident the car is silver but there are traces of green on some of the front end stuff .

The thing is I don't know what works or not . So some of the electric stuff (abs diesel controls I pulled off, but will probably put on a shelf ,you never know.
I hope the alt and the starter are compatible with a petrol motor, good to have home.
