Best rubber for 406 saloon?

Post by fattail95 »

Hi there guys!

Having a bit of a spend up on Puggy this month, as some money has come through. Gonna get the ECU remapped, the alloys refurbed and whilst I'm there I think it makes sense to renew the rubber as its looking a little old. I was wondering, what are the best tyres for the 406? I'm after excellent grip, but also good wear characteristics. Coming from a Classic Mini to the 406, I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to the best rubber!

Any advice would be great :)

Which tyre size is yours? I think 195/65 R15 is the most common, but some were 205/55 R15 and the Coupes (all of them? not sure) were 215/55 R16 :)

If 195/65/15, then there's not a whole lot of performance orientated stuff in this size. However, I fitted a set of Continental PremiumContact 5's which have been outstanding. £54 a corner from Camskill when I got them.

D8 2.0 Coupes came with 15in Starfish alloys; the D8 V6 Coupes came with 16in Starfish alloys (as the 16in wheels were required for fitting over the Brembo brake calipers).

The D9 models started to come with 16in Hoggars - on the Settant'Anni and the Silver & Black special editions, they came with Nautilus alloys, which were also 16in. Following the 2003 facelift, the standard Coupe alloy was the 16in Tacoma. No D9 Coupes came with 15in wheels.

I'm currently running a set of Hankook Kinergy Eco K425 on mine, in 205/55R16. I've got maybe 15000km on them so far.

They're quiet, grip well, seem to be quite wear resistant, and they score better in tests than the equivalent Michelin Energy Saver+ despite being less expensive.

I've just popped into my local KwikFit, and they also advised me to get the PremiumContact 5's, price is £54 a corner so that's what I'm gonna go for!

Thanks for your help!

That's a good price for good tyres from Kwik-Fit, every time I've asked them for a quote they've been very expensive.
