MoT fail

So it went for its first test under my ownership yesterday, I knew it would fail as I hadn't sorted the airbag light or the handbrake but I thought I'd chuck it in and see where things were.

airbag light - fail
handbrake - fail (12% :lol: )
excessive corrosion :shock:

The tester identified a small hole in the O/S sill, just under the drivers door.

My mate had a look for me and this is what he found after removing the rubbery seal stuff and grinding back the crap

Not exactly the small hole I was expecting to find, I think the weather seal had lifted and water was sitting between it and the metal, the inside of the sill actually looks pretty good.

Its being welded up in the morning and the handbrake adjusted properly, I sorted the airbag light by unplugging/reconnecting the connectors like a man possessed and now have clean contacts.

Ho-hum, thank god for free retests !!!

Oooh, not too good with the rust there, maybe the underseal was damaged/scraped away and made a nice little gap for the rust to live :(

Found a similar sized hole about 6 weeks ago when i washed the car a flake of paint came off... Had a little prod with the key it went straight through and the hole kept getting bigger.... £20 weld sorted that though and another £12 in paint.....Must finish the job :lol: ....On the plus side for you though I can go take a pic of it has it is and we can compare welds later. :lol:

Glad the inside of the sill is OK and you can get it sorted easily Gareth. Fingers crossed it passes the retest 8)

Better go check my sills!

I have yet to find a 406 with a decent handbrake. When I bought mine I fitted new discs/drums, new shoes and pads and new cables and its still not much good. If I adjust the shoes immediately before the MOT it passes but doesn't last long.

Getting the rear pads and disks a bit damp before the MOT can help too. :supafrisk:

Nope, mine passed the mot last year only just... I adjusted them not long after and it's gradually got worse over the 8 months or so since doing it.

The trick is bedding the new shoes in and several re-adjustments until everything settles down.

I got the handbrake working well on my last 406 and this one has been OK, bar one cable adjustment.

Mine have bedded in until about half the lining has gone on one side, and yes, they are fully releasing. They only seem to work well for the first couple of hundred miles from adjustment. Occasionally if you pull the hand brake up when moving slowly they will lock. :shock:

Sorry Peter & Scotty but your doing somthing wrong, just see jasper5 post's on the subject or mine :supafrisk:
I have a s**t hot hand brake & have had since my second adjustment sesson after bedding in :supafrisk:

I think i got a cable problem to be honest I've followed Jaspers how too twice now and each time i have to tighten the cable to it's limit.

My handbrake is bob-on. I adjust it through the disc hole so it bites, slacken it the tiniest amount and then its good.

I do, however, when sitting in stop/start traffic use my handbrake to slow the car, just to give it a bit of binding.. 8)

Seems to work.

Was it waxoyled or treated with any other anti-rust product it its life? I would think it really pays off considering the sills in particular seem like such a weak spot.

Oh yeah, and keeping the drains clear and the rubber molding clips in place, obviously :-)
