Well that went quick!

Post by Bailes1992 »

Sure that all of you that have met me, and some of who haven't know that I'm training to be an Electrician.
My apprenticeship is four years long. I spend 3 years in college doing my City and Guids 2330 Level 2&3 and my NVQ Level 2. I then do my NVQ level 3 in my 4th year.

So yesterday the 3 years of college came to an end. I finished my final exam (City and Guilds 2330-301) with a Distinction.

I can't understand where time has gone. As quick as a week starts it's finished. I'm sat here now looking at a calender trying to work out how the hell it's Friday?
Before I started college I remember my training adviser showing me a gantt chart explaining what qualifications we will be doing and when. Back then I found it daunting and thought it was a massive amount of work, but in the blink of an eye it's gone!
It's not something I wanted to do when I started and 3 years later I must admit it's still not something I want to do. BUT! I enjoy going to work every day and the guys I work with are a good laugh and It's a rare occasion when I feel sick of work.

Now I have to try plan the next 2 years.
I'm hoping I can finish my NVQ 3 and my AM2 by the end of the summer. Also sometime through the summer I want to do inspection and testing. Then come September I should be starting my HNC. So still plenty more to do.

Well done Sam! :cheesy:

Particularly since you weren't really keen to start with.

I remember finishing my apprenticeship and getting an immediate hike in earnings, (from £15 to £18 a week).

That'll give you a clue as to how long ago it was.

Who's that old man in the mirror? ooh it's me

Well done Bailes, it's a decent trade to be in if you make the effort. It'd do you good to move around a few companies when you feel you're ready as you can get stuck with being "young Sam" at your current place and held back financially as a result (seen it times) but that's a way off yet.

Congratulations on your result. Times have changed, I started work in 1954 as a TV engineer, electrical work was just part of what we did, no qualifications needed, I still do my own but not allowed to do anyone else's. There were few rules and regulations in those days and everything was wired in VIR which often didn't last very long, when the plastic stuff came in (3/029, 7/029 etc) we thought it would last forever, and it has in our house. :D

I wish you every success with your career.

Congratulations. FWIW, I found through my working life that when you are busy time does fly. My apprenticeship went past in a flash, as did my Army life. Now I have time to sit back and reflect, time still flies.

Good for you Sam, keep going with college for as long as you can.

Good luck with the new course mate!

One thing I've begun to realise now is: the more quals the better! even if someone is a useless waste of space as long as they've got a list of quals and courses longer than your arm then they'll excel

Bailes you should consider being a First Aider too especially when working on site. One day you can get your construction industry Supervisors' certificate and then you can do f*ck ALL and get paid more

Just going to pop this by here...

Starting to get a bit bored on the tools now. I have my AM2 next week which is the last hurdle to become qualified.
I'm hoping in the New Year things might start picking up and the office I work for will start looking for staff.
