Model Ranges

Post by WarrenB »

Hi all, just had a look through the forum and can't find what I'm looking for, but apologies if it's already elsewhere and I've missed it.

Basically, I'm after a Transit, but also seriously considering a 406 estate if I can't find a Transit soon enough (end of the month!).

Many many years ago my dad was looking at buying a 406 estate (1998-ish), and from studying the brochure back then I can remember the basic specs..

L - Entry level, no toys
LX - few toys
GLX - Mid range
Executive - Posh

Also the two derv engines - 1.9 with 90bhp and 2.1 with 110bhp.

At this point it's quite obvious that I need to get out more....

BUT! I've had a quick look around autotrader and ebay, and noticed that the recent models (D9s??) have SE and Rapier and spec. What is the closest to the original GLX spec? And whats the difference between the SEs and Rapiers? There seems to be quite a few differences between similar models I've found...

Also, what diesels were available when the XUDs were replaced?

Ideally I'd like an early 2.1 GLX, but they seem to be none existent or run into the ground nowadays...

Cheers in advance!

I think it goes as follows, for D9;s anyway

L ( Manual seats with no wood trim on the doors - maybe wind up rear windows? )
Rapier = LX ( manual seats but far from basic, black ash trim normally )
S = GLX ( Eleccy seats and well equipped )
SE = GLX but with Half-Leather
Executive is still the top model

This isn't gospel - it seems Peugeot were being very random towards the end of production as to what spec was in which car??? I think the S and SE were 2003/2004 models.

D9s have Hdi engines, 2.0 litre 90bhp, 2.0 litre 110bhp, and a 2.2 litre 136bhp.

More refined than the XUD or the DW8, but also more to go wrong.....
2003 2.2hdi estate - mine
1998 Volvo 940 auto estate - also mine
2019 Citroen C3 something - the wife's

Hi Warren and welcome aboard. 8)

Your summary was pretty accurate for the earlier cars, the facelift, (D9), with the black mesh grille initially came in the same sort of specs, not sure if there was ever a plain 'L', but you get LX, GLX, GTX and Executive versions, later these were replaced by Rapier, S and SE, though there may have been a bit of overlap. The fisrt mentioned in each of these groups is the 'poverty spec' version and the last, the poshest. Since you don't pay any extra, I always go for the top spec. You may have different priorities if you're looking for a van substitute, but my bro has a 2000 HDi 110 exec he uses as his all purpose workhorse, (he's a self-employed plumber).

The XUDs were initially replaced by the 2.0 DW series HDi engine in 90 or 110 bhp versions. In late 2000, the 2.2 HDi 136 was added, but this one comes with a diesel particle filter, which made them unpopular second-hand buys for a time. Nowadays it's fairly easy to get rid of the cursed DPF cheaply.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Cheers for the replies! That makes things a lot clearer!

After looking at a few before signing up to here I was under the impression that the Rapiers were quite high spec, they do seem to come with a lot of toys!

This does help to narrow down the search a bit though, think I'll avoid the 2.2 HDi as I tend to do a lot of short journeys between big ones which would do a good job of bunging the DPF up, and try and go for a 110, and go for the highest spec I can. I'll mainly be using it to throw the mountain bike in the back, my current Astra hatchback is too impractical. I'm after a van just for ease mainly, can throw more than one bike in at a time too then...

Just depends on how quick the Astra goes (and how much it goes for!) as to whether I go for a 406 or a Transit.

Hi & welcome.

There is an element of whatever parts happened to be lying about the factory at the time.

Since you're looking to buy I'd say first pick an engine (probably HDi 110), and then decide which toys you absolutely must have.

There aren't really any toys that you can't live without. I'd say the most exciting stuff is:
* leather. The D9 leather door cards are beautiful.
* built in sat nav (by modern standards it's crap, but it's good enough) but you also get 2 trip computers, and the display is higher resolution and set out better.
* is there any point having electric seats without memory?
* all round electric windows
* ESP (very late cars only)
* 5 clock dash (the extra clock is oil temperature)
* CD auto changer
* alarm

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Which models have the 5 clock dash? I'd quite like that... more clocks = better :cheesy:

Sat Nav I'm not too fussed about, there'd only be me driving it so memory seats wouldn't be an issue, a CD autochanger would be nice too, but I could always put an aftermarket stereo in (I'm guessing at the sacrifice of the steering wheel controls though).

Clocks vary a bit too, but a 2001 or later Exec, GTX or SE will definitely get you 5 clocks and probably cruise control too, with the 110 or 136 engine.

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

If it's purely for work and mainly short journeys then a 110 is the way to go, post millennium cars get cheaper tax but you might pay a bit more because of it.
The 2.2 is an uber smooth cruiser but even with the DPF removed and remapping it won't touch the 110 around town which is probably no good for a work vehicle. The modifications can be done cheaply tho and they are fun to drive with the extra horse power!
Full leather is probably a good idea as it's easier to clean than cloth if you're wearing dirty work clothes but it's a simple swap if you find an interior on eBay.

Personally I'd say get a van and a 2.2 and de-fap and remap - you know it makes sense 8)
1996 1.9 TD LX (Gone but not forgotten)
2003 2.2 HDI SE

Are all the diesels 5 speed?

The neighbours would hate it if I had two vehicles outside the house, they already get stroppy if I'm parked even slightly outside their houses... weirdos. Although it might actually come to that if I end up with a 406 and get attached to it!

My D9 (a V-reg model from 1999) didn't have rear electric windows; they were manual wind. The front had electric windows. It had digital climate control. It had 4 dials - fuel, revs, speedo, temperature - but I can't remember if it was oil or water temperature. It did have a clock, but it was the digital one built into the Type B display.

It had a tape deck. No CD player. No CD autochanger. No front fog lamps. No auto lights (great, cos I hate them anyway). No headlamp washers. No cruise control. Manual, cloth seats. No seat heaters. No sat-nav. No sun roof.
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.

You are wise to avoid the 2.2 although its nice and smooth the fuel consumption is rubbish, I have had both the 2.0 and 2.2 in C5 guise and had difficulty getting 50 mpg from the 2.2 while the 2.0 will do 60mpg+ on a decent journey. My 406 is a GLX there are plenty about for very reasonable prices on ebay and I think they will have most of what you want, the seats are excellent with lots of adjustment, make sure its got electric seats though as occasionally they don't.
