How about fitting a replacement head, any damage to the pistons is likely to be inconsequential.

I didn't do anything to the car apart from 30 quid oil and filters change 45 miles before this catastrophe. I will give it some thought re the rebuild. I don't wanna gamble money away with repair or cylinder head replacement etc. The only consideration that I would give is to a sub 90k, BOSCH pumped xud9 engine to replace this. I will have a look and pop a wanted in the forum guys. That is a fair point you've made re this being a motorway cruiser. That's why I chose this over a 306 or toyota equivalent.

Bugger!!

I wouldn't worry about mileage! An XUD will go on forever as long as you change the oil and belts.

Added to my contingency list. Thank you. I have just made a loose deal on a hDi. Will keep this and a spare engine sale as back ups. My dead car had done just over half of this cars miles :(

Yeah, its hard to find a low mileage diesel.... :(

Both the XUD and the HDI are famed for high mileage ability so either one is okay.

My Hdi has done 230,000 miles not out, still with the original clutch and DMF - and head gasket as far as I know, so I wouldn't worry.

Thank you, if this will do me 100k more, I'd be delighted.

Head gasket??!?.........is this another worry for me? I forgot to check the coolant reservoir, although there was no vapour from the exhaust on start....

The Hdi's are much better than the XUD for head gasket life, I have seen Hdi's with leaking gaskets but only a fraction of the number of the XUD's which seem to fail at around 150k. I think the Hdi's use the composite steel gasket which is a far better job than the old copper ones.

The low water light showed on mine a few days ago, the first time ever, that had me worried but I think it was purely because I hadn't put any water in it for about three years, it hasn't come on since.

I will have a look at this car again. There was a lot of fluid around the injectors when I took the cover off, but I suspect this was just inaccurate attempts at filling the engine oil. The area around the power steering fluid reservoir was damp too. The steering did not seem any worse for this. The die is cast!

Check around the coolant filler cap for signs of dry antifreeze, check the level, and I check for antifreeze by taste, should be sweet, be suspicious if it isn't. If the coolant is low and there are no signs of leaks generally it means its not using water and hasn't been topped up for sometime.

If you buy it check the condition of the rad back & front (by undoing the clips & tipping it back) if there is any signs of leakage (dried anti-freeze)
fit a new rad, this is by far the biggest killer of head gaskets on a HDi, but there not very common (it's just better to be safe than sorry).
If all is well drain, flush & refill the cooling system with long life (pink) anti-freeze (again just to be safe).
Other than that they are great cars, just cambelt every five years, oil every 6k & if it fails to start suspect the lift pump in the tank.
Wishing you better luck with your future purchase DDD :) .

Oh if you see oil on top of the rocker cover near the inlet pipe it'll be leaking from the air dosser if you have one fitted
I ripped the gut's out of mine & blanked off the spindle holes 8), but you need to disarm the E.G.R at the same time as these work together
But that's a good idea anyway :cheesy:

Happy days thanks for the info. I will work my way through them. They seem reasonably easy things to do anyway.

Righto just dragged back the DODGIEST 2.0 hdi in history. The abs light is on and the brake warning light. The seller had run a scan and the error showed an open circuit on the osr. He also pointed out a broken abs sensor on that side. I suspect this is a red herring.

I did notice bad rust under the ns B - pillar and had it repaired with photos as proof of good work. I will stick a few photos when I figure how to via tapatalk.
