How much is my 2004 406 110 estate worth?

Post by panadero »

I am thinking about selling my 406 but valuation is tricky. It has done 40,000 miles only from new and I
am the second owner. I bought the car off HSBC finance in 2009 with warranted mileage of 28,000 and service record. I have only
done 12000 miles since then as I am retired. It is a 2.0 HDI diesel SE with the lower emissions engine so road tax is £145.
Half leather, sat nav, alloy wheels, electric seats, door courtesy lights. I have done the servicing myself with all parts invoices available together with service record. I have been filling up with Shell V-power. There is no diesel particle filter to worry about on this model. Car is somewhere between very good and excellent condition with any minus points being compensated for by the unusually low mileage. It really needs to be used. Bit of a reluctant sale really but as I get older the car is getting harder to get in and out of, so needs must. Any price suggestions please?

My guess, I would advertise it for £1950 and expect at least £1500,

not enough really but if it wasn't such low mileage etc you'd be looking at £800....

First off congratulations on your retirement and such a great car purchase but also sorry that you now find it difficult to use comfortably, but that is understandable. The 406 is quite low to get in and out of.

The other thing would be to go for a petrol engine next time as this would suit the low mileage better, please avoid the new generations of small diesel engine they are very complex and do not suit low mile users. I guess you need a car you can side-step into without too much fuss.

Back to your car it could command very high money on the right day, for the right person, somebody might happily pay £2,500.00+ for it knowing they are looking at at least 150K miles ahead, having said that it is 10 years old regardless of the miles.

VERY difficult to say but basically it is worth whatever someone is prepared to pay. You're very welcome to advertised it here for a few weeks for free and we can assist with uploading your pictures if you need to. To be honest if I was in the market for a 406 this week I'd be at your door without doubt.

You could look at advertising on the 'Car and Classic' website, that place has people specifically searching for low-mile genuine cars. Whatever you do please do not trade it in at a dealership; they will show no interest whatsoever and the car will get punted out to some local underwriting trader trying to make a few quid, you'll be offered an insulting figure for the car.

Many thanks to Welly for that excellent and detailed response. I have not traded a car in for decades for the very reasons
you give. I will definitely put it on your website because apart from anything else the assistance I have been
given on this website has been second to none. A totally honest appraisal of the vehicle will be given. At the moment I have to sort a
broken spring. These cars are very economical as I get around 46/47 to the gallon calculated on a full tank.
That's on mixed running. Given the load carrying capability of these vehicles I think that is pretty good going.
I think Peugeot made a big mistake in moving away from the 406 estate design. Its' replacement was the 407
estate but the fad for streamlining had by then taken hold and with a lower rear roof line, the car just was not
the same spacious beast. In my book if you have a tried and tested success story like the 406 estate (also Land Rover and Volvo) you
should stick to it/improve where appropriate - but sadly modern car manufacturers seem to have different ideas.
Thanks again,

You might get an idea of the value for a quick sale by looking on ebay and see if there is anything similar, you need to wait and see what it actually sells for, the asking price doesn't mean much, but with such a low mileage it should certainly make more than the average.

Unfortunately for personal reasons I cannot put the car up for sale yet. Thanks (and apologies) to those
interested parties who have contacted me about it.
