I've just seen a bloke shut the tailgate of an estate car by pressing a button and it shut itself, nothing amazing there I know but he stood there and watched it close I guess if you've got your hands full ok but come on...

My car is choca block with lazy features...

Power steering so I don't need to struggle moving arms too much when I'm parking
Auto-lights so I don't have to turn them on in the dark
Auto-wipers so I don't need to move my hand 2 inches up to turn them on as well...
Cruise control so I don't need to use my left foot
Electric windows so I don't need to manually wind the windows down during the 4 days of summer
Central Locking so I don't have to walk around the car to let bitches out...
A horn, so I don't have to shout out of the window
A little lever that opens the fuel cap for me...

Do I need a button to close the boot for me - yes, of course I do... I'll see if MarkW can rustle something up ...

Really missed my radar guided cruise control today. I mean imagine having to manually adjust the cruise yourself, all day! My thumb is knackered!

Seriously though, it could get dangerous. The Volvo not only adjusts the cruise but even brakes if needed to keep you a safe distance behind the car in front. If you get too used to that and just forget for a second that you're driving a different car you could find yourself approaching the traffic jam too quickly, stand on the brakes, car behind is a bit close, there starts a pile up!

Features like the radar cruise would be an amazing safety aid if everyone had them.

Oh and the powered tailgate is just awesome

Locally to me lives a man with an electric hatch. He opens it up to put his golf clubs in, then drives to the golf course around a mile up the road, parks up and turns the engine off and uses the electric hatch to get his clubs out. He then spends however long doing his 9 or 19 holes, goes back to the car and again uses the battery to put his clubs away. He then returns to the 19th hole to await the AA to give him a jump because his battery is now too flat to start the car. When he has used all his AA calls that they say he is entitles to he pays the excess each time. Both myself and the dealership have tried to explain to him that all he is doing is draining the battery doing this, and recommended he either drives the car to charge it or put his battery on charge, but he has now been doing it for a few years because, he says, he likes his car - just not enough to drive it around.

I went to a 'motor show' (excuse for all the local dealers to try and shift some cars) at the weekend and sat in a brand new Range Rover.

I took my first look at about midday (on the first day of the show), and marveled at the electric side step that extends when you open the door, the electric door closing (think soft close kitchen cupboards) the electric boot (both top and bottom bits) and the instrument binnacle which was just a full width screen, which together with the sat nav and rear screens had a lovely land rover logo seemingly permanently displayed.

I later met up with a friend and went to show him the amazing electrical wonders. This was 2PM ish. Opened the door, side step came out, looked inside, the land rover logo had gone to be replaced with a big yellow triangle "Battery flat please start car". Went round the back and had to lift the boot myself

I know the previous model had a habit of depleting batteries, waking everything up each time you open a door. It seems they haven't managed to make the new one any better.

(would still love one if money was no object "starting at £74,000 Hopefully they will throw in a spare battery and some jump leads for that)

My Dad's Focus keeps going flat because he only dribbles around locally and then sits in the thing listening to the "wireless"...instead of the car struggling to start it just refuses after completing some 'checks' to verify something. Or something.

But yes, all new cars are shyte and I don't know who decides what it is we want from a car nowadays, oh wait, the American export market! Imagine the shame you would feel in California if you had to shut your own boot...BY HAND you'd never live it down.

I don't know why but I think I'd feel embarrassed operating an electric boot in daylight hours I used to see Merc C-classessess's 'pop' the boot remotely which is kinda handy I suppose but would still need a slam by the driver after.

I have documentary evidence that attests to the ease with which my economical, environmentally friendly vehicle complies with emission limits. So there.

Anyone who tells you, (or produces a video of), my car at the head of a 50 foot plume of the stuff exiting Orchard Corner at Prescott is telling porkies.
