Re: Central Heating Problems.......
Update.
I have managed to put the motorized valve onto manual, which means that I have heat in the radiators but only when the hot water is on. Its a good compromise short term, until plumber comes next week, and then see what happens....
Thanks again for everyone's input

Re: Central Heating Problems.......
Well done, that's one advantage of having a manual overide. As long as I can keep warm I don't mind putting up with a little inconvenience.
My experience a couple of weeks ago was that our pressure jet oil fired Rayburn suddenly packed up, no fuel being injected, I found the problem to be the fuel solenoid coil, couldn't find one anywhere on ebay until I put in the part number on the unit, came up with one for a Karcher pressure washer - works a treet.

Re: Central Heating Problems.......
Woo, and indeed, Hoo - heating is fixed.
I did take a bit longer for the plumber to come round but this is a busy time for him, and at least we did still have some sort of heat from the hot water system and the log burner so I guess we were low priority.
'Trev' came around at 6pm, drained the system, fitted a new motorized valve ( one with a detachable head ) and refilled the system after unblocking the cold feed.
All done by 7pm and the total cost including the valve was pretty much what I expected to pay - it would have been so much higher if I did it ( broken pipes, water through the ceiling, redecorating downstairs ) due to me being more than capable of turning a relatively simple job into a massive f*ck-up....
The house is now warm and toastie so hopefully now the kids won't wake up at 3 in the morning cos they are cold
