Hello from Reading, Berks
Alright moose here
I'm after a 406 diesel estate and here appears to be the place for help and info prior to me hitting the freeads
I'm after either a 2.1td or 110 hdi estate for sub £1000 money just to use to lug stuff around and save the mileage on my t4 camper! These have always appealed due to the load size and durability
I would preferably want one with cruise control but these seen to be rarer than hens teeth especially on the older 2.1's
Lets see what arrives on the drive!
Thanks for all your help/ abuse in advance

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
There's a moose loose.....
Hi & welcome aboard.
I don't think there's such a thing as a 2.1 with cruise. First available on late 2000 on 110 HDi Executives and GTX's.
Any 2001 on 110 or 2.2 Exec, GTX, SRi or SE will have it as standard.
Cruise can be retrofitted to some lower spec 110 or 2.2 HDi's, but not all have the wiring, which makes it more tricky.
Happy hunting.

Hello
The only why i ask is that one i'm looking at on autotrader ( a 2.1td) says it has cruise! They may be bulling does anyone on here know for sure as i like the idea of lazy driving on the motorway and the simpleness of the the 2.1 over the more complex hdi's
Thanks

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
I don't know for certain, but others have tried to retrofit without success.
Maybe you could ask the seller? (If it has cruise it should have an extra stalk, below the one for the indicators).

Hello!
I don't get the appeal of cruise control, the motorways are so busy you can never really use it it would seem to add to the stress by having to constantly judge when to adjust it or turn it off/resume/etc... I don't use mine I never seem to set the right speed.

They only make sense once you get onto the (in)continent.
Hi there Moose, welcome
You need to make absolutely sure it has cruise, maybe they ticked the wrong box or something. Or it may be after-market. I don't think we're 100% sure no 2.1td got cruise, it's just we've never seen one with and are presuming they never got it (they never got a trip computer, we're 100% that though)

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
I use crooze for at least 45 miles of the 60 I do each day and have done since the late 90's, barring 4 years without when I had the Xsara HDi.
After driving that to Biarritz & back without, I made damn sure both my 406's had it.

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
No c/c stalk as far as I can see - it's an LX, which is fairly basic spec anyway and unlikely to have cruise, even if it was availabe on the 2.1
There's probably a much bigger choice of HDi's these days.

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
Thanks for the info
I'm looking for a 2.1 over a hdi as i'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that they are more robust as in less to go wrong less sensors etc
The newer better looking and specced hdi's do look more appealing though

I dunno, after driving both I think I prefer the D8 (pre-facelift).

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
I owned both, the 2.1 and the 110 HDI. Which one do I prefer? Hard to tell. The 2.1 feels faster than a 110 off the mark, especially in a remapped guise but it's not as refined and sounds like a bag of spanners on a cold morning.
If reliability of the HDI is your only concern, I wouldn't worry. They are extremely reliable when looked after (and even when not!) and parts are more readily available for them as there are simply more HDI engines around. It has DMF which can be costly to replace but they don't usually give trouble. Mine lasted 145k on original DMF/clutch. Also, with a PP2000 diagnostic interface (£70 on eBay) it makes it pretty easy to diagnose any electrical niggles. So I would go for the HDI but you won't go wrong with either.

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
2.2's are nice (I have one!) but they don't give me the confidence that the 2.0 HDI or the 2.1TD gave me. I think they are just too complicated for their own good. That said, they are still still pretty reliable, especially if you gut it like most people did.

Re: Hello from Reading, Berks
Hi gents
Seen a 110bhp glx for sale with only 70k on the clock, which says it has cruise
On the pic below is the stalk below the indicator stalk cruise? Or is it for the remote radio controls?
Thanks
Kevin
