The flywheel has been off previously and whoever fitted it failed to ensure the flywheel was flat. Half the bolt holes have no thread at all, one is mashed and the others are cross threaded.
Not worth putting a new engine in it.

I'm f*cking gutted. Loved that car.

Talking more than the value of the car by the time you put a new engine and clutch in it.
Mechanic knows someone who may want it as is. If not it gets towed home tomorrow and broken for bits.

That was mentioned. It's too hard to drill and even if we could get it helicoiled we aren't convinced it could put up with the torque.

Oh sh*t. Sorry to hear that Sam, gutting.

So, what's it actually need, flywheel or crank? Crank I guess. It's hard to believe that puts it beyond economical repair but you're right to be logical and call it quits, rather than splash money out because you like the car, at the end of the day that's all it is, just a car.

Ideally it needs a bottom end rebuild. Could get away with a new crank.
We could try to tap the threads but there's no gauruntee it will hold.
Unfortunatley I've decided to be sensible and call it quits.

I'm going to get something for £1500 this weekend to abuse for a 12 month and then buy my Dad's car April next year.
Well that's the plan anyway.
I've got a 5 or 6 cylinder itch that's dying to be scratched.

I'm amazed this car hasn't been snapped up already - it was originally up for £1500, then £1150, now down to £950

Woke up this morning feeling less sorry for myself.
It's worrying how sentimental you can get over a car.

My Dad has offered to loan me a sizeable deposit to go buy a brand new car. Fiesta ST or maybe a new MK5 Mondeo?
We'll see how today pans out. I was looking forward to having something old to abuse for a 12 month.
Found a lovely 2004 Volvo S40 2.4i Geartronic less than 5 miles away!

Its a very generous offer Sam, you'll get a warranty, many ways to haggle for 'extra's' ( no, not that sort of extras ) plus the repayments to your Dad will sting you far less than any HP company..

Go for it - its a great opportunity for a brand new car, even if you end with a Fiesta.......
