The clutch can wait until it's desperate to be fair.
I'll be giving it a good service this weekend and change the two gaskets that are leaking.
Always nervous about pulling a sump off, afraid that a bolt will snap!

hardest bit is you have to remove the exhaust ithink to be able to get the sump off.
the mani-cat splits 4x bolts.. so you don't have to remove the manifold. so it aint to bad realy.
I'dont think gaskets are used on sumps anymore.. people seem to be using stuff like 'RTV.
Id clean it up and then see if its actualy the sump leaking before removing it and re sealing..it might be running down off top of the engine,

The sump gasket* will be a PITA, unless it's leaking a lot you're likely to cause more trouble than it's worth? I'd be tempted to clean it up and run a bead of instant gasket gobbo over it? if there is such a thing?

ordinary gasket makers wouidnt stick to the old stuff., incl RTV.

Just phoned the garage who did the rebuild.
Apparently it was a top end rebuild only because the head gasket was leaking oil.
If the exhaust has to come off I may just try to bodge it for the time bring and replace everything after the CAT when I get time to do it.

That might be a bonus then,
if its had the headgasket done..itl more than likely had a new cambelt kit.
which reminds me..mine needs doing. more £££s to find/spend.

Cambelt kit fitted is £170 Inc vat at the local PSA specialists. Not worth the risk at that price.

Mines not on its original belt.. Jasper5 had alook at it.
only trouble was theres no mention of it in the 'service history so idont know its limit.
Someone then came up with the idea..write to the last owner.
sent him letter recorded delivery. £20 enclosed for his time, which he sighned for.
never heard nothing back.

Charming, although once he'd pocketed the £20 there was no need to answer your question. Remember most people are not that nice.lozz wrote:£20 enclosed for his time, which he sighned for.

I remember ringing the previous owner of my 406 (found his home number scribbled on an Invoice) he sounded a smashing bloke and preceded to tell me about all the international Caravan towing the 406 had completed

Good news!
Back box doesn't need to be replaced. The join is between the centre section and the back box is leaking. It just needs to be split, cleaned up, a bit of exhaust paste and put back together with a new clamp.

if there out like the 207 exhaust back boxes..

I recently did a head gasket job on one of these, they all leak oil from the head gasket, the oil gallery is at the back of the engine block.
It's easy to get a leak from the rocker cover on these, sometimes when you fit the rocker cover (which can be a bit fiddly) the rubber gasket can turn under and not seal properly...it happened to me!
I would say the same as lozz, it will probably of had a new cambelt fitted.....you can easily check by taking out 2 small bolts on the top cambelt cover and sliding it off, you will be able to see the cambelt.
BTW, changing the clutch on these is quite a simple job.

Re: Anyone tried to buy a cheap car latley?
Already done it and wasn't convinced it was a new belt at all! I should have asked the garage really.
How simple is simple Jasper? I've done the clutch on the KA and there looks to me heck of a lot more room in the C3!

You can do the cambelt quite easily yourself if you have doubt about whether it has been changed (water pump too)...the water pump is only held on by 2 bolts...cambelt is easy to do, only top engine mount in the way, take that off and the rest is easy.
There's lots of room to remove the gearbox, you have a light gearbox to handle too.
The last one I did took me 3 hours from start to finish....clutches are cheap too.
Re: Anyone tried to buy a cheap car latley?
Iguess what puts people off doing clutches on these..is the engine bay looks cramped.
once Battery & tray is out. (which is plastic.) everything looks a lot easier.
