Going out for Dinner - How Much!!

Post by Welly »

I'm quite proud of my cooking abilities and make a wide range of meals at home which we enjoy preparing and eating in our kitchen/Dining area whilst we catch up on things etc.

Friday night for a change we went to a well-known Pizza emporium in Town as Mrs_Welly had exchanged some of my Tesco Vouchers to use against the food bill.

I had a Chicken Caesar Salad [read: mountain of Lettuce, some cheap croutons, and approx half a chicken breast kinda shredded into the mix, it was a rip off but edible.] Son had a pasta meal which was about the size of a starter at best and Wife & Daughter both had Lasagna which was small and turned up boiling at about 1000 deg C, they were still picking at it when I'd finished* mine.

Before this we'd been asked if we wanted pre-starters, 'starters' and then any other accompanying expense with the actual meal. Drinks took the form of 2 x small cokes rammed with Ice at £2.45 each! a small bottled Larger at £3.60 and I mistakenly agreed with the waitress offering me a 'Large' bottled Larger not realising it was a whopping £6.55

During the meal we were bombarded with Mega Noise from the trendy in yer face Kitchens clanging pots and pans about and other diners talking loudly over it; we found it difficult to actually talk to each other :frown: we were constantly being badgered by the staff asking if we wanted more things :frown:

The bill was £55.00, not the end of the world I know but for what we received it was shocking. I likened the experience to any other high street rip off chain; drag you in and sell it high. I cannot stand this approach I know I shouldn't really compare a 'fast' restaurant to a quality one but I sure as hell will never go to one of these places again.

When we got home we started on the crisps as we were all still hungry  I worked out that to gain a 'decent' meal with drinks would've been at least £100.00 for us.

It's ridiculous - you wouldn't mind so much if the food was OK/good and the experience enjoyable.

I recommend you tell the Volvo set as well, (mind you they mostly won't notice the noise).

There is your problem :)

Is that not a smidge like ordering the cheese omelet at the Indian and expecting to be impressed?

I was about to say, I've paid the equivalent of £160 for dinner for two more than once...

But on all of those occasions, the restaurant in question was a very nice local family-owned Italian restaurant, and we had 3 courses each plus wine. Sure, One can argue against a £12 tiramisu, but people usually shut up once they taste it.

£55 for three people at a fast food-ish place sounds like a right ripoff.

Daughter_Welly had already experienced the Pizza at the place and pre-warned us :supafrisk: I don't really like Pizza that much or Pasta for that matter

I guess my message is more of cost verses the experience of it all with me knowing I can do better at home, in comfort, and have a conversation in private.

I forgot to say, the look on the Waitress' face when I declined to add a 'Gratuity' payment to the hand-held card machine was priceless :cheesy:

Making the assumption this was Pizza Express, you are probably correct. It is amazing how they manage to stretch the base so much as to make it see though (presumable to save profit)

I only visit such places when I have a voucher...

What frustrates me so much is the UK's lack of imagination or 'classiness' generally:

Need* a Coffee? - Costa it is, then I can walk about town looking like an important* busy arsehole.

Got a puncture? - Kwik Fit it is, they'll take care of all your needs (and possibly more).

Can't see f*ck all? - SpecSavers ....

Why can't we be treated like decent humans with thoughts of our own rather than sheep, bores me to death to be honest, although I've never been one to follow the crowd I have to say (see: Grey Volvo) :cheesy:

Mushroom pizza (can't stand any of this salty pork nonsense on my pizza) and a chimychanga at the local mexican* restaurant is 9 quids. The pizza hangs over the side of the plate and I feel like a bloated pig afterwards and t'wife has only ever finished a chimychanga once...

No chains here to speak of, there is a McDogfood's in Zagreb but its never busy. Oh, and almost any local cafe here will do you a coffee that makes anything you could buy in Costapacket taste like dog water.

The high street in most UK cities is just a carbon copy of each other. Every bloody place you go, you'll find:

Coffee: Caffe Nero, Costa, Starbucks
Electricals: PC World / Carphone Warehouse / Curry's .digital (Dixons Group), Maplin, Game
Clothes: Superdry, TK Maxx, Matalan, Next, GAP, Fat Face
Department Stores: Marks & Spencers, John Lewis, probably House of Fraser too
Supermarkets: ASDA, Tesco, Somerfield, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland
Restaurants: McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, TGI Friday, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, Gregg's, Nando's

That said, every time I go into a Frankie and Benny's or a TGI Friday, yes the place is noisy, but the quality of the food has never let me down, and I will always come out of there feeling like I couldn't eat for a week (and that's just after a normal main course, no starters and almost never a dessert). The prices aren't astronomical either.

Nando's can FRO though. First I have to queue up for a table. THEN I need to leave my stuff at that table and go queue up to place my order. Then I need to wait an indeterminate (but always geologically-long) period of time for said food to have arrived, the staff having allowed time for it to first be cooked (read: burnt) and then sit under the sun lamps for enough time to allow all of the juices to evaporate before they take it over to me. The chicken is typically flavourless stuff that, by this point, is tough and chewy enough to be mistaken for leather. The gormless waiting staff then turn up, take the plates away, and offer to sell me some dessert. So they can (and do) do table service, but not for the main meals (hence why you queue in the 1st place). The tip jar is on the damn counter, even. Like they're saying "tip us now" before you even get your bloody food out to your table. NO. My tip is a reward for good service. Making me stand in a queue is not good service. Taking more than 30 minutes to deliver dried meats that were moist meats once they finished cooking 25 minutes previously is not good service. The prices aren't astronomical either, but I know I'd rather take a cheesegrater to my own balls than eat at Nando's.

However, guess what the wife's favourite restaurant chain is? Yep. Bloody Nando's. She likes their chicken livers. <barfing smiley>

THAT'S what I mean, style and a bit of thought into what the customer will enjoy. And I bet you can drink it at your leisure without feeling like you're getting in the way :frown:

Your Nando's must be under poor management as, although I hate to say it, they're the one sort of cheap/quick place I don't mind. We've never had a bad meal there and my chicken's always been juicy :) I like the 'butterfly' chicken meal for around £10.00 with Garlic Bread and Chips. I always opt for the refillable Soft Drink and fill my boots (what was I saying about class again?) :supafrisk: I've also had one or two very tasty Steak Sandwiches there and for 4 of us it's never more than about £45.00 tops I think.

I make it sound like I'm always there but I guess I've been 5 times to 'my' Nando's and 3 or 4 in that Portsmouth when I visit.

Another -1 for the Nandos. Your branch must be an exception. Never had a bad meal there and actively seek them out when traveling...They don't have stores this far south

Up until quite recently I thought Nando's was a chain of clothing stores

Not really, this is just normal. Most cafes here are family-run, often using part of the family home. There are some that try to be more professional but they're not typical. Most of the money they make is from beer anyway.

I never feel like I'm getting in the way, nowhere here is like that (sometimes I even feel like a captive audience waiting for the bill)

Maybe it's because I'm of a newer generation but I quite like having Harvesters and TGIs everywhere.
I know what I'm going to get every time, how much it is going to cost and what I like. Most of the time when I go to chains I know what I'm going to order before I even get there.

I'll have the lot.... :supafrisk:

I think I'm the same, going somewhere new there's always the question of what to eat. Spend ages looking at the menu, what's good, what's not, what could they possibly make inedible...
