Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
You removed the 2 bolts on the inner driveshaft bearing?
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
removd the nuts from the bearing carrier completely. in the book it says it should then come out.. im gonna split the driveshaft as way too heavy for me and hubby and boys gone out.
maybe i can get the assembly unbolted from the engine with just the first half of the driveshaft removed

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
Unfortunately it is very heavy, that's what i said earlier.
You should be able to remove the whole mount block or knock the bearing from the gearbox side.

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
off for round 2...
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
Good luck!
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
at last.... got it out. now need to fit the new rubber mount.
was looking at a way of winding it out with soome stud but the diameter of the bush is too big i think.
do most garages have presses do you know...

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
Glad you got it out
Most garages will have a press.
You can use a vice if you have one.
Cut the inner metal ring of the old mount with a hacksaw blade and knock it out. Clean up the housing where the mount fits then clean up the new mount outer casing. If you have an angle grinder or something you can use to grind off a little of the new mount outer casing then do so.
Before fitting the new mount you need to make sure you fit the new one in the correct position...look up some pictures of the mount in position...you will notice the rubber blocks inside the new mount...they have to be set in the correct position or the effect of dampening will be lost.
If you have a vice you can grease the housing and the new mount then press the mount in position using the vice.
Another thing you could do to help is to freeze the new mount in the freezer then try to fit it.

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
i cheated. i went to local kwikfit and then pressed it out and the new one in for £20..
torrential rain though so hopefully can get her back together today if not tuesday.
anything i should remember to do in a particular order. had to slpit the driveshaft so now in two halfs.. will this go back together ok , i presume i just repack the gaiter and fix the gaiter back in place with ties.

Well done

Good, sensible cheat, makes the driveshaft easier to handle!
Fitting it back together...
Fit the mounting bracket and bolts.
Fit the inner driveshaft into the gearbox and those 2 swivel bolts that holds the bearing in place.
Clean the bottom of the strut and open the slot in the hub where the bolt fits using a chisel or something that will expand the slot slightly.Grease it as well.
Repack the inner driveshaft and bearings then fit the whole hub and driveshaft unit into the inner driveshaft....you may have a spring in there that will be a bit hard to push in (some do, some don't) fit a new clip or tie onto the rubber.
Slot the hub onto the strut locating the little pip on the strut into the slot on the part where the bolt fits then fit the bottom ball joint and the strut bolt.
Refit the caliper and the other bits and make sure everything is tight and ABS Parts are still good.
Take out air filter box and fill up the gearbox with 2 litres of 75/80 gearbox oil.
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
perfect.once again. hope rain stops tomorrow. looking forward to having the car fault free for a while, unless i make some more in the refitting .lol
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
I forgot to mention...refit the track rod end...you might like to steer the car afterwardsannie wrote:perfect.once again. hope rain stops tomorrow. looking forward to having the car fault free for a while, unless i make some more in the refitting .lol

Sorry about the rain I hope it stops soon ...It just started raining here, been fine all day.
Good luck

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
all back together.... nearly.
put in new diff oil seal and dust cover... £13 total from ecp.
the boot that covers the join in the inner and outer driveshafts is a real pain to put back on and even with cable ties it comes off so ill get a new gater that splits sideways. i need better clips than cable ties to keep the boot in place i think
only have caliper to do but sliders are a bit pickled so freeing them off
i started it up and it no longer bangs.
when i pulled out the inner driveshaft a lot of oil came out but i cant measure it so am i better draining all the oil from the box and refilling to manf qauntitys

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
Yes, that boot is a real pain...if you can, you would be better with a metal clip on the boot...would a jubilee clip fit on there?
Those other boots are not my cup of tea!
One way to help you fit a clip to the boot would be to drop the bottom ball joint onto an axle stand and lift up the bottom arm so that the driveshaft is at a better angle to slide the boot on.
Yes, drain the whole gearbox and fit 2 litres of 75w80 gearbox oil ...I suggested this because there is no way you can tell how much oil comes out unless you measure it....in any case I'm sure new oil would be a good thing!

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
just need to fill gbox now.used the bottom most bung to empty it.
the book says go in from the side but is it better to come from above like you said before.
the haynes book says 1.8 ltr top up as 100ml is left in bottom of gbox after its been emptied

I find it easier to fill from the top through the plastic breather.
