Not quite there yet!

Hi all
I put a deposit down my 2001 406 LX today and I will be picking it up in two weeks so I do not quite own it as yet. It is a lovely car and for its age it is in pretty good shape a few minor scatches to sort out and some surface rust in one of the door seals to do but all in all it is pretty sound.

Drives lovely really looking forward to picking it up.

What flavour of 406 is it, most questions can be answered on here.
Just be patient with the replys, it's a bit quiet of late.

I do not pick her up untill the 28th of January, but once I get her home I will take some photos and post them.

I guess you are right not so many people do own 406's these days, but to honest that is half her charm. I really missed my classics ( I have had a few in the past) and I guess this one is some where inbetween so sort of a compramise.

Definitely agree about the charm of an older vehicle, I love parking my 406 in a car park and looking around to make sure I have the oldest car there, 99% of the time I do.

Thank you for the welcome Blackblade 58 Just over a week to go and I can pick up mine ^_^. (not that I am counting down or anything)

The other thing I like about older cars is less electrnoic things to go wrong. We had a brand new Peugeot 308 as a curtasy car while my Husbands was getting some recals fixed on his Spark, please do not get me wrong it was a fantastic car but way to much tech for my likeing. I dont like the idea of a electroic hand break either call me picky but I like to operate my own.

There has been a marked decline in the number of 406s about recently, I have two good one's at the moment so its not a problem. I have been looking for possible replacements when they die, don't fancy the 407 not enough room in the back (estate) but I have noticed that there are some very cheap X type Jags about now, I rather like them, the interior suits my age.

The x type is no bigger than a 407 probably smaller in side & loads smaller than the mondeo it's based on

The estate looks as though it has a longer load space, the 407 looks quite short compared with the 406, or at least it does from the outside, am I wrong?

I thought about x-types too, unfortunately they never made one with a proper 2.2 diesel

I think they are Peugeot related but not Peugeot. They do sit upright so you can get to most things a lot easier.

Peter, google "Jaguar X Type rust" and have a look at the Images

They suffer bad rusting of the sills but which is mostly hidden by 'styling panels' and it's only when it makes its first appearance past these and to the owner/MOT man that it reveals the true horror behind the scenes. Something about poor drainage from the sills (where have we heard that before).

I did notice that Welly so care is obviously needed. Unless anything drastic happens my 406's should last a few years yet, I might be to old to drive by then.

Yeah exactly, mine has just the right amount of electrics fitted, all still relatively fixable if needs be!
