Really sorry to hear that, very sad indeed he sounded a smashing little dog. You did the right thing to end the suffering and what a shame to experience his instinct to have to lash out at you in pain in that way

Poor Rufus. You did everything you possibly could for him but sadly it was his time, Unfortunately dogs can't tell you it hurts, most of the time they have to show you.
