One is blowing, driver's side, and I'm considering fixing it with JB chemical metal putty as the garage quote isn't viable on a 180k car.
Anyone ever done this on the 406? Looking for advice on how best to access as so far access is by touch only, I'd be working blind. Bonnet off make it easier?

I done one maybe two plugs on the rear of the engine. It was a pig of a job and from memory i did it from underneath by removing some stuff. Not a nice job !!

If you are going to use filler of some sort you will need to get it scrupulously clean which is difficult if you can't get to it but I would suspect that spraying a strong solvent into it might do it, something like carburetter cleaner or cellulose thinners might work.
I remember changing one at the back of the cylinder head on a Humber Super snipe many years ago, I made up a tool that went between the head and bulkhead to push it in by screw pressure, it only went partly in but it stayed there.

Its done now anyway.
Dumped all the coolant and let it drain for a day, then got as much solvent splashed around the area as possible and dried off again before putting the putty in. It seems rock solid but time will tell I spose.
Tomorrow I'll fill it up and test.

As long as some went through the hole it should have a good key. I have on a couple of occasions fixed the leak on a radiator with putty!
