Hi, I'm sorry I can't help you find your engine number but the D8 (early 406) engine is the older 194bhp engine in cars up to about 2000, and a D9 (later facelift 406) is a 210bhp unit with VVT.
I believe the blocks are the same, the head and emission control are the main differences as far as I know. There is no definite date where the engines change, some facelift cars have the older engine - affectionately called a D8.5 by the owners :cheesy:
Gates are the recommended water pump and belt kit.
LUK or Valeo are the clutch of choice.

If you get yourself a Service Box account, you can enter your vin number there (only the last 8 digits required) and check the part numbers for your engine, much more accurate then motor factors.
