Good progress with the upgraded kit there, when someone else welds something for you you think nothing of it but when you weld yourself a whole world of doubt bothers you afterwards

I can't find where (or if) I said about my Volvo lacking boostage, after investigations it required a new Bosch 'boost pressure sensor' as it was reading falsely high and opening the waste gate to dump boost.
All good again now though, back to full pressure!
Much to the annoyance of certain German vehicles

Yes, you did mention it before, I'm not sure where either. Glad you got it sorted anyway.
In other news, the top step is off again - I forgot the beam doesn't have a nosing so I have to move it back an inch, whilst notching out the angle 8x2cm so it fits around the pipe. And probably the next one down too, and the next one. And probably, err, all of them. Arse
Miloš just came to see it, to be honest he didn't laugh as much as I was expecting...

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Well done steve & stick with it,
That welding plant is sold over here under the Clark name, quite a good unit for the money.
Stick welding is easy on stuff over 3mm thick & still the best for site work, I first did it aged fifteen
Got a distinction for welding in my first year of my apprenticeship, aged sixteen & spent a good chunk of the 90's
Doing site welding, manly construction work on buildings, towards the end of the 90's I started doing TIG pipe
welding for the pharmaceutical industry (Lloyds coded).
As Doggy say's only use new rod's or ones you know the provenance of,
if you buynew ones keep them dry & unused ones keep in the airing cuboard.
Over here murex are a good rod.

This is still mig, it's something I'm familiar with (if not too good at) but I was dreading having to learn to arc (you mean the rod gets shorter? )
I quite fancy having a go at tig though, it looks interesting, but it's the amount of gas you seem to need would be a pain here, and it looks like everything has to be perfect before you start. Although the next model up from the one I'm looking at will also tig, and it's only another 60 quid Yeah yeah, I know that game....

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Shame on you Welly - I can't do that anymore, the terminally ill dogmobile now has a failing brake servo, meaning not enough reserve vacuum to control the boost. Spends half it's time in limp mode.Welly wrote: ↑Fri Feb 22, 2019 4:44 pm I can't find where (or if) I said about my Volvo lacking boostage, after investigations it required a new Bosch 'boost pressure sensor' as it was reading falsely high and opening the waste gate to dump boost.

Re: and today i have mostly been...
I know there's been a little* bit of harmless banter between us all over the years about re-mapped dizzlers, dpfs etc etc but it is genuinely sad to read that.
All you can be sure of is that you squeezed every last usable mile from that car which demanded very little from you considering the miles you do. Perhaps a fitting tribute would be to mount it horizontally on one of the A14's overhead bridges for all to bask in its automotive greatness and for all future generations to aspire to.
I used to think my 110 went well for what it was so a properly sorted 2.2 must be stonking!

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Indeed, must be/have been a real eye opener. It'll be a sad day indeed when the last dogmobile heads off to the tin can factory
Just taking a break from grinding. Today I have taken the cylinder head from my bike from the mechanic to the machine shop (dismantle, clean, skim, valve seat job, tappet shim job, 10 valves = 160 quids, seems remarkably cheap to me). I've also been to the hardware store for another 15m of 30mm angle, I'm also sending back one of the 80mm square tubes 'cos I think I can do without it. Even with the angle, a bag of 25mm screws and a stack of cutting disks they still ended up owing me, so I threw some cash in and bought a Makita GA5030 125mm angle grinder. The supermarket special is still going but I've buggered up the lock, so it's become a nuisance swapping between cutting disks and flappy wheels. It'll be fine for flappy wheels for now but at the end of this it'll go in the bin. Or maybe I need to hang it from a motorway bridge...

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Still all go, if rather slowly - too many calls on my attention (mostly cats). The guy who runs one of the cafes Max and me go to died so I was at his funeral yesterday. Nice bloke, used to be pretty good with a ball https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marijan_Bradvic.
Where was I?
Hmm, looks a bit narrow.
Nah, could be worse. She'll be right.

Re: and today i have mostly been...
I see, I guess it would be ok though but will you keep stepping on it and thinking "I wish I'd made it wider" ....
I think personally it looks as if it would benefit from being bigger (with your foot on it like that) although it might mess up your plan for the next few steps?
Excellent work BTW !!

Re: and today i have mostly been...
Still processing really. The next step down will actually cross the 80mm tube and I'll have to notch out the middle of it, so it would indeed make more sense to make the corner steps wider. The angle there is 30 degrees, easy to think about, I did start bringing it out so it doesn't interfere with the tube but then the angles go a bit weird, unless I go to 45 degrees but then I'll have to make another step out into the room which I was trying to avoid. Oh, and regret sending that other 80mm tube back...
I guess I really need to think about it before I go welding that step firmly into place...
