just a quick question:
are handbrake shoes inside the discs all the same ? on the 406
seen some on ebay for £9
took a disc off the rear and a piece of friction material fell out , only leaving half of the fiction material
I suppose they have not been renewed for over the time I have had it nearly 10 yrs 125k !

Yep, all the shoes inside disks are the same, 9 quid sounds a bit too cheap mind...

Quick question, can you paint the backplates with cheap house paint ? or do I need High Temp Paint ?

Aynthing's better than the standard bugger all. They're rears so they shouldn't get that hot.

They should be plastic coated.....

Probably not anymore though - I just painted mine with Hammerite before the ball ache of reassembling the shoes and springs...

Bitumastic paint is probably better from a rust prevention point of view. You need the softest lings you can get for the very inefficient handbrakes on the 406 but I don't know who makes them, some research would be necessary.

Update:
found some rustoleum in back of the garage for the backplates, looks good

done one side, but need to fix the old backplate pin problem a s bottom one too sloose ,might pop out and make a mess !!
seen threads on here to use bolts. I could do this but just a thought, has anybody tried to to reverse the pin and fit an old type concave locking washer that they used in the old days !!

Basic Question: need to get brake pipe out of the caliper as I need to renew all the seals ! , the brake pipe is just twisting when I turn the nut , Is there a trick to getting the brakepipe to free from the nut you turn ( don't no what you call it ? lol) I do not have a blow torch . I have used WD40 , tapped the pipe inwards !!
If I cannot release it I will have let the garage do it as I do not have brake pipe making flareing tool

Story about calipers needing new seals !!!!
Fitted new calipers about 2yrs ago from germany ( should have known they were to good to be true, brand new in the box £80 for the pair )
when doing this job I noticed the seals were all totally nakt, all split and cracked !

Take the caliper off and unscrew it from the pipe. Refitting is reverse.

Cheers peter, yes had a look at youtube vids
got the job done, backplates a bit ripe , so painted them with rustoleum.
renewed all the seals in the calipers job done !

Just a heads up for anyone doing the rear handbrake Shoes

My vehicle is a 2003 406 HDI 90 Estate

In answer to the original question, Yes there is more than one size ! I read this thread and ordered a set of rear handbrake shoes it did not matter from where I purchased them from as the answer was !Yes they are all the same"

Well I have spent 3 hours in the Pi**ing rain trying to work out why my new handbrake shoes would not release when handbrake was released, it turns out that the shoes are approximately 10-12mm longer that the worn out shoes I removed so they space off the lever mechanism.

My only worry now is how I find the smaller shoes that are fitted to my car as they are supposedly all the same.

I am now off to annoyingly throw the ones I have just purchased in the bin

Can anyone give me a part number for rear Handbrake shoes that will fit My 2003 Peugeot 406 HDI 90 Estate car, as previous post the ones I purchased are a different size to the ones on the car, I have taken photographs of the old and new shoes but cant seem to upload them to show everyone how do I upload Photo's ?

Any help greatly appreciated MOT on the 7th October and no handbrake
