Duke,
Looking good for an old un , I'm sure you'll get many years of happy motoring out of it
1. It's a Volvo, from when they were well built.
2. Your a retired mechanic
I'm surprised you have given up so easy on the pinch bolt, especially as you've buggered the end
Personally without seeing the problem, I would be using an induction coil (I have one at work)
or the oxy-Acetylene with a number 2 or 3 welding tip so the flame is small & controllable but hot.
Either method will shift it
can i join the volvo crew?

Re: can i join the volvo crew?
hi ive not given up just regrouping and thinking next best move,in the meantime ive ordered the bits to do the engine crankcase breather or pcv as the rubber glove test where you check crankcase pressure by fitting a glove over the open oil cap and if it inflates then the crank is under pressure, well it launched the glove about 3 ft in the air so safely say pcv is clogged, hence the oil leaks.dirtydirtydiesel wrote: ↑Wed Aug 05, 2020 9:50 pm Duke,

Re: can i join the volvo crew?
hi all well its taken me 2 days on and off trying to dodge hottest part of the day as i have copd and get breathless easy esp when its this damn hot,it addles your brain and being a cambelt thats no job for a less than perfect brain!
i think a 10 thumbs owned this before and has tried to do several of the notes from mot ie the balljoint boots etc and not only rounded them off but broken and left several bolts from around the car,one being a waterpump bolt sheared just above the engine block and i was lucky after removing the old pump the remaining stud came out with a little help of a pair of tiny molegrips,
after that it was easy enough once i worked out the timing belt had hung up on a bolthead where it loops the crankshaft which explains why it was a bit short!!
the worst bit of the job is the tensioner hydraulic and has to be removed and in a vice to close it and takes an age to close one wind every 5 minutes for 30 minutes a time,i had to do so 5 times!first time wound back and stuck a small nail through to lock it released vice and nail bent.broke launched across my workshop!back to the bench and this time found a rivet that held but then found id forgot the plastic spacer that should be on top of the tensioner, off again and after slapping myself i got it right and fitted up ready to fire up later when the cauldron cools!pics later. peace

Re: can i join the volvo crew?
hi all well sods law strikes again!i replaced the obviously leaking heater matrix and all the hoses and clamps but at the time the rad though old had zero visible leaks, well this morning after walking me dogs i came back and noticed a puddle under the car, bloody radiator has now decided to spring a leak! this bloody car has cost a small fortune already for which i have recieved severe earbashings on every damn expenditure.
to be fare we are on a very limited income and so any extra expense is a problem as something else doesnt get paid.
so with a budget at minimum i debated a used rad from the local breakers but they want £40 and zero guarantee so i looked at the cheapest new unit on ebay which just happens to be the same supplier as the heater matrix i recently replaced and yes before anyone pipes up with you must use oem/oe parts i simply do not have funds for the extra cost and besides which this is a uk company and both the matrix and rad come with a 5 year guarantee,4 years longer than our local volvo dealer offers and at a lot less cost.
so unwitting guinea pig for the cooling system supplied by coolpartsuk this is the rad
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RADIATOR-...72.m2749.l2649
i just hope and pray this is the last big expense atleast till i get the car through the mot due imminently ,my luck sucks!

rad done!
hi all well the rad came today very fast service indeed dpd courier and very nicely packed, the make is unknown to me banco and made in india.
the rad comes with all the mountings and fastenings included which was great as 2/3rds of the originals just snapped as soon as any force is applied.
it fitted nicely and car has been run up to temp and fan cut in and out again perfect,i let it cool a while and then topped the coolant up to the max mark and shall go for a nice long burn around tomorrow .
i did notice the rad for the ac is very rusty but also it has bowed so i guess its toast?ive no idea on ac its first car ever for me that has it.
the company i got the heater matrix and rad from do the ac rad as well but im not sure if the interior one is any good either, can one see the interior one without taking half the car apart?any advice would be handy, pics later of my work, peace
