Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
Hi, I'd need some help please to identify correctly the compressor for the A/C of my Peugeot 406 2.1TD Break from 11/1997, as it is leaking and because of the impossible quote the specialized garage made, I'm going to order myself a new compatible compressor and my mechanic who I usually go to will install it, and only then I will go to the A/C specialist to have it vacuumed and charged with gas. Only problem seems to be to identify correctly, while searching on the net I found two different types, not sure if that's correct. But then these seem to be suitable for quite a lot of cars of the PSA group, not only the Peugeot 406, so maybe it won't be that tough. Today I managed to shoot some photos of the installed compressor (as the system shortly works fine after charging and before the gas escapes reaching low point, I assume it's the correct model). Here they go. I was able to identify a part number (6560502). Googling it up looks like it's a Delphi. Can someone confirm this? Also, what would be the easiest way to obtain the correct OEM number from here? Or can I try to search for equivalents for this number from Delphi? As I'm not sure if I can trust the "vehicle compatibility" tools from part sellers... often they are not very precise... Thanks for any hints on this.

After a second good luck, it seems this number 6560502 is already the OEM number??? Now I'm confused.

What, the number on a part is actually useful? That makes a change!
Looks like it's a Delphi https://webautoricambi.com/prodotto/com ... e-6560502/

Re: Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
Yep, that's exactly the same compressor as fitted in my car. Thanks for confirming. And yes, it's a Delphi number, not OEM, just had this confirmed on another place. I think some website had this number mistakenly identified as OEM, that's what had me misguided this afternoon. Now, the real challenge is to find valid substitute from other brands for this, as I might not be able to get a new Delphi (or at least, for reasonable price). For what I understand by now, it has to be exactly the same in the following points: type of gas, pulley size, pulley grooves (although I suppose a 6 grooves compressor can be used on a 5 grooves system but not the other way round, in my car it's a 6 grooves belt system), mounting position and distances (although I suppose a little "improvisation" might be possible, that doesn't sound like something easy to do). I don't think it's really critical if the electrical connector for the clutch is a little different, that can be improvised easily. What I don't understand yet, are the following points: type and quantity of PAG oil has to be the same? do they all use the same diameters and connection types for the two hoses? Or are there different sizes/fittings? I know one of the hoses usually is thinner and the other is thicker. Are there any additional relevant data that has to match? Still a lot of research to do.
I found the exact substitute from Lucas, their parts catalogue works great. Seems that also a Sanden compressor has been used in the 406 I have, at least they list it as an alternative. It is exactly the same regarding a lot of data (like mounting points, pulley, grooves, etc), but it has quite different specs regarding PAG oil quantity and type. Can any of the two be used on the same car then, as long as system is flushed and then regassed and filled with proper pag oil type and quantity for respective compressor? Or does the rest of the system vary in some detail, depending on which of the two possible compressor brands is used in a certain 406?
Here are the links to both from Lucas, the first is direct substitute for the Delphi one that's mounted in my 406:

Re: Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
As per this link viewtopic.php?p=151849#p151849 (which I thought might only apply to the D9 2.0 HDi) it seems like they got Sanden or Delphi/Harrison randomly, the only obvious mechanical difference seems to be the length of the belt (I'v no idea about the fittings of course). Looking on GSF for the 2.1 Harrison is listed as 1750mm and Sanden 1740mm. They also list a 1115mm belt, presumably for cars without a/c (ooh, hellish) which might get you out of a hole if you need to leave your a/c compressor off for any amount of time.
I've got no idea about the oil, I would have thought the amount would depend on the volume of gas in the system, but I'm pretty clueless on a/c.

Re: Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
Thanks, this confirms about what I've researched. The Sanden type seems larger (even physically), probably is a little stronger, therefore also uses different amount of oil, and logically is more expensive. So, for me this reduces the choice to the Harrison/Delphi model, as even the compressors from compatible brands logically reflect this price difference. I'm going to look for all relevant brands making this Harrison model and look for the best deal. For now, I've only found the Lucas part and possibly a Valeo part (though it has differences in the pag oil used, again, that's why it would be so important to understand more about this part, I think I'm going to research this, too...). I will get there eventually

Re: Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
So, I found all the alternative makes/models. I can post the list here (can't assure that all of them are correct), if that doesn't go against any rules of the forum. It's actually easy once you identify the correct type. Here, it's a Harrison/GM V5. Right now I'm looking for the best deals for a V5 type, which for now seems to be the Nissens 89060. It has good reviews on the net and a good price, and is readily available from different places.
I researched the thing with the PAG oil: the garage has to follow instructions of compressor manufacturer, otherwise it has no implications on the system, just have to use the right oil for each compressor (and right quantity). To be on the safe side, I will remind the garage of this and hand them over the manual of the compressor (yes, I have a hard time trusting garages...).
Thanks for all the support.

Re: Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
I can't see why that would be against the rules, post away. The nissens compressor looks just like the Delphi, fingers crossed!
Yeah, me too, not after one Citroen "specialist" left my wheel bolts undone and a Citroen franchise put the wrong oil in my gearbox, requiring it to be rebuilt (possibly unnecessarily).

Re: Help needed identifying correct compressor for A/C
Just a quick closure for this thread: the compressor is installed and working great for more than one week now, so problem solved.
