Big end?? The end is near!!

Post by diesel-dog »

My old smoke has developed a rythmic dull knocking noise when ticking over!
She is a 1.9td d8 with 193k on the clock.
The noise can only be heard on tickover, as when in motion the old diesel tune drowns it out! The noise is definately bottom end.

Question is how long can she limp along like this? :?:

Not really thinking repair as she needs a clutch, cambelt, brakes and a wheel bearing doing before long, so would rather spend the cash on a replacement car (another d8 diesel of course).
If she aint smoking, we aint moving!!

You may find it's Diesel knock due to wear in the injectors.

Your Big Ends (oo-er Matron) should not wear out at that mileage unless you've abused the oil changes or ran it out of oil at some point.

I wouldn't condem the thing yet fella.

Thanks for the reasurance, I did a 400 mile round trip in her today, 80-90 most of the way and she never missed a beat. Really don't want her to die, i love the old dog!

Oil changes are every 6000 with me, and the noise has only now appeared.

Are there any other obvious signs of wear of the injectors, and is it an easy/cheap diy repair? :?:
