Hi,
Few questions;
The new car makes a kind of winding down sound (much like a jet engine when you have landed and the engines are turned off (but at a lower sound level) the car only does it when I am decelerating and have the car in gear (for engine breaking) and only seems to happen at 2000rpm and below and seems to be present when I am in 3rd gear and holding at 2000rpm or lower and also seems louder in 3rd (or maybe me) any ideas? (Noise seems to be coming from the left side of the engine (from the perspective of seating in the driver’s seat) - James is this the dozer thing making this noise if so is it normal or do I need a new one
Two people how have had the bottom crank pulley go, how loud is the noise? As I can hear a very very light scratching noise when idling (can only hear with the bonnet up and me out the car listening) and if I nudge the throttle very very slightly it goes away. Just wondering if how long I have before it dies (as I have had to replace a driveshaft and clutch this month)

you will know when the crank pulley goes as it makes one hell of a rattle, it sounds like the engine is about to fall out, so i wouldnt worry about it till it gets to this stage then get it changed quick, the ticking noise may just be a slight case of injector knock, HDi noises vary greatly car to car, some you wont even tell are a diesel whereas others can sound worse than a million mile 1.9td
your winding down noise is most likely the cooling fan slowing down, try driving with the a/c off and see if the noise goes away, if not it could be handbrake shoes dragging slightly or a noisy diff

Just been out in it again, with the A/C Off and all in car fans off and it still does it; -
In 5th gear only starts at 1,000rpm
In 4th gear only at just below 1,500rpm
In 3rd gear exactly when I hit 2,000rpm
The noise does not change if a break or just use the engine to slow the car down or both, and the noise goes if I dip the clutch in any ideas? (The noise is the same as you get in a bus if you sit at the back, winding down noise as the driver engine breaks)
If it is a noise diff can I do anything about it (apart from replacing it) as I am taking the gearbox and clutch off? (is this a sign the diff is fooked and will die in say 20K)
Could it be the driveshaft as the mechanic said it has a knackered bearing or bearing housing on the longest driveshaft this is also causing the car to vibrate at anything over 60mph

I'm not sure whether this is a problem or whether you are being over sensitive to your new motah
Don't get me wrong here but you can panic about different noises in a new car and you are probably keen to get everything ship shape before the warrenty runs out.
The bottom pulley failure is so loud it is instantly obvious that something is horribly wrong with your car (it happened to me over about 3 days).
I would be cool about it, drive the car and if it pulls well under it's own steam and without hesitation, flat spots or smoke and can reach 100MPH reasonably swiftly then you should be fine.
My engine sounds funny sometimes, other times really quiet - I've just grown to ignore the thing, hell I hardly ever look under the bonnet any more.

Don't think it will be the driveshaft, the noise wouldn't go away when you put the clutch in if it was. Sounds more like gearbox/clutch to me. its not the gearbox or diff related as the noise goes away when you dip the clutch, as the noise is beyond the clutch its disapearing when you remove drive from it, its also speed related which means its related to rpm, all i can really think of is the DMF, you'll know if its that when the clutch is out

Hi,
And are there any test’s I can do to diagnose the problem further?
If it is the gearbox what does this mean, just live with the noise or expect it to get 10x worse and break?
I am thinking get the clutch done and sell it, and start again

Forgive my mechanical ignorance but it still could be these, because when you dip the clutch the engine will drop to idle speed (reasonably quickly) and remove strain on the gearbox. Could it be an air hose that has come off or something like?not the gearbox or diff related as the noise goes away when you dip the clutch
And are there any test’s I can do to diagnose the problem further?
