My First T25 Hybrid Turbo Complete

Post by niz406 »

Well Guys,

It's done, finished, complete.... now just waiting to be fitted this weekend weather permitting of course, as you can see below the before and after pics show just how much work I put into this..... at least I hope ! ! :D

To appreciate how much bigger the comp wheel is, please look at the space left between the two before and after pics around the comp wheel, you can see how much had to be machined out.. :D

Here are the final specs:
  • Garrett T28 Comp Wheel - 60 Trim
Garrett 360 degree Stagger Gap Piston Seal
Comp 360 Degree Thrust Bearing Kit
    Official Garrett T2/T25 rebuild kit
According to sources this turbo should be good for 250 - 300hp.

For those who wish to try rebuilding their own turbo I will be adding an article in the KB when I have sorted all the pictures out and prepared the text, will let you all know when its up on the site of course :D

Let me know what you think...

I'm very impressed!! (I'd put a thumbs up emoticon here if there was one :cheesy: )

Look forward to seeing your how to, and reading about the fitting testing to follow.

Are you going to get it on a rolling road/remap to benefit from the new turbo?

Well to start with the system will be running stock boost levels, although the flow rate ( CFM ) will be greater and the charge temps cooler, so a slight increase in output will result.

I did contact Prima Racing the other day as my next project is the FMIC which I have a spare front bumper for, as my first step is to extend the bumper 3- 4 inches to accomodate the cooler and pipes. The list of Products I was buying include the following:
  • Apexi Power Intake
    400cc injectors
    3 Bar map sensor
Apexi AVC - R electronic boost controller
Greddy - eManage piggy back ECU
Miltek Sports Cat rated to 350hp
But unfortunately, Prima Racing are unwilling to map it for me, because they do not have any experience with that ECU so I offered to purchase it and then let them have the software for a week or so to get comfortable with it before attempting to map it for my car... as they are the closest french tuners with a set of rollers to me...

As they have been unwilling I may have to see if Malachy will possibly do me a megasquirt system and map it for me, or map the eManage :D

Which FMIC are you going to use? I've seen some nice looking twin pass units on eBay for just over a ton.

Makes me wish I had an FI car to meddle with (well I have I suppose, but not one really to bother messing with too much), I might look for an old turbot on eBay for my HDi and look at refurbing it. Mines covered over 100k now and I'd love to be able to refurb my own instead of having to buy a replacement. (I've got access to all sorts of equipment at work, lathes, millers, huge vapour degreasing systems, wet bead blast systems, would give me a good excuse to play with them :cheesy: )

I'm definitely looking forward to your write up, how did you go about rebalancing the new internals etc?

Well I've seen a few, but it might be one of the following: off ebay of course: :D
  • HKS
    Trust
    Allard Motorsport
    Pace
    XSPower
Depends on whats around at the time of purchase, and then obviously a piping kit will be needed also.... Rebuilding a turbo is easy, as you do not need to rebalance it... I will explain all in my write up, but hybrids.... using different comp wheels etc... is a different story... most components come factory balanced and then during the build you balance them together... as I do not have the measuring equipment to balance it I had a guy I've used before do it for a very good price.

After doing this build, I can saely say I will never ever pay for a rebuild again.... did I say ever lol

THis was the FMIC the guy with the 306 is using

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Medium-TwinPass-F ... dZViewItem

Don't know if you've already come across these guys for your hoses/pipework

http://www.siliconhoses.com/

Am I right in thinking that the 360° bearings help to speed up spool up times etc?

Twin Pass isnt really what I would look for due to the fact that although the charge passess the cooler twice, its still exiting the cooler on the hot side.... so the end cap temp would raise the charge temp prior to it reaching the inlet, so there would be only a marginal benefit on such a set up... of that type of application for me.

The 360° Bearing basically gives the thrust bearing / collar a 360° point of contact with the thrust plate, this means that the load distribution for thrust is far superior to that of the standard 270° bearing. In terms of spool times, the spool will be smoother... this also allows you to run higher boost than the standard bearing as the type of wear on the plate is totally different to the stock bearing.

Because the bearing has complete surface mount the thrust is purely rotaional, with no wobble in the shaft that can damage the turbo.

I am the Boss (a small private limited company) it's flipping hard going but one nice benefit is having the interweb open on my desk and visiting car stuff like Youtube and streetfire and here when I want too :P

The only problem is I spend far too much time on here and seem to have extended the working day from 07:30 till 17:00
