MOT....

Ok Guys,

So I took ye ol faithful into the test centre.... with it I took my cat and asked them to fit the cat, adjust the handbrake and then do the MOT for me.... my guy says "Not a problems, but we'll do the mot first to see if it fails on anything else otherwise there is no point in doing the other work." Kind man... didn't want to take my money and then fail me lol

Outcome....

Emissions... NO CAT fitted
Handbrake only 3% lol
front brake hoses knackered!

So it's going to cost me £260 for two new pipes... brake fluid and system bleeding, fitting cat, adjusting handbrake and the MOT...

"Fine, please go ahead" I say....

The brake hoses were melted by the tracking place next door to the test centre when they heated up the tie rod ends.... yep that is right they burnt my hoses and so two weeks later they were the things to fail my MOT.

So I get a call, we can't adjust the handbrake at the disc's anymore we need to replace the cable because its siezed.... I knew this was the case, as I tried to do it myself... usually I get round it by fitting new shoes before the MOT.... not this time, couldn't be bothered lol

So that's an extra £41.16p to do.... "That's fine, can I have the car back for half two?"

"were going to struggle to get it done for then, as its 13:00 now" they say

How long does your book say? I know how long it takes done it all before lol

Anyway back on topic.... it passes and has 12 months on it..... but it cost me £301.16 If I wasn't so lazy I could have just paid £50 for the MOT alone... hahahaha

But Still 406 has 12 month ticket, time to sell lol

How did your last MOT go, spill the beans... let us know what failed if anything.... we should have a chart for common failures so people will know what to check.

Taking my car in for MOT + service next Monday... absolutely dreading the bill. I think oil looks like mud at the moment as I last changed it myself 9000 miles ago (around June time). Tracking is fked - veers to the left all the time, but if I straighten out, then the steering wheel isn't straight but pointing to the right. Although, that MIGHT be to do with the fact that my front passenger wheel was replaced recently whereas my driver's side wheel is probably not even legal any more. So need to replace that too..

Oh yeah, it wobbles when I brake - been told need to replace front disks + brakes as the discs are 23mm something and they should be 24mm.

Well that's all the problems that I know of.. Let's see what they come up with.........

Last year mine failed on one rear anti-roll bar bush. So i had them both done.

My MOT runs out next wednesday (10th) so im just begining to worry a little

Did you have any advisory warnings on your last MOT?

No advisory's last year. The garage guy said it was in good condition

Maybe this year i wont be so lucky. I know handbreak is shot so im looking forward to more surprise's this time

mine failed last on two headlight bulbs (where working the night before!) and emissions.

They fitted two bulbs took for a run (probably wasn't fully warm when they tested it) and it passed. Cost me about £55.

They didn't manage to find what is wrong with the rear suspension and keeps sending me sideways in the wet thou.

really should do something about that!

my 406 MOT

front wheel bearing
front subframe mounts x4
rear pivot stub axle bushes x2
headlight bulbs
rear indicator bulbs not lighting orange
wipers not clearing the screen
osf side indicator lens missing

parts @ trade £115

fitted myself , did buy the bush tool £57 which will go back on ebay in the next few days but it made the job easier

and a mate in the trade pressed the bearing in for me as I dont have a fly press..

The MOT seems so much stricter over there in the UK compared to our Annual Inspection here?

We don't get done on emmissions...they frown and will fail you if they see any rust, brakes are checked, all lights and turn signals, horn, tyres etc?

I failed last time on Tyres - got a new set and passed it with flying colours?

Whats actually involved with the MOT inspection?

Basically:

They check for headlight aim and all lighting works including fog light.
Horn
Wipers/washers and blades
Seat belts checked
Suspension & steering joints checked for play, dampers inspected for leaks.
Tyres checked for tread and cuts/bulges
Exhaust checked for leaks
Brake hoses and pipes checked for corrosion/splits/damage
Fuel lines checked including fuel filler cap!
Brake performance including left/right balance checked on a brake testing mini rolling road thing
Exhaust emmisions at idle and 3000 rpm checked against a database
Diesels have a smoke test including a full throttle brutal test

A couple of years ago they introduced a computerised testing database thing where each car is timed and 'logged on' to a national database at the start of the test concluding with the emissions test which is logged at the end of the test (45 mins). You cannot do the emissions test before the 45 mins is up otherwise you will be seen to have missed out other elements of the test.

Re-tests are a pain because you have to wait 45 mins and go through another emissions check even if you've only had a track rod end changed which needs to be checked in the retest.

thats slightly out of date as it mentions an mot costing £44.15, its now £50.35
all the changes to the mot can be found on the VOSA website, but you have to pay for the full testing guide

Had mine tested end of last month , cost me £35 which was cost of mot
was a very happy bunny. Since then a pin hole has appeared in the intercooler
and i think my A/C compressor has died
