Ahhhh!

Remind me never to own a car in the UK!

BTW does anyone know if you are allowed to register a right hand drive car you bought in the UK and register it in NL and get it insured?

I know the rest of Europe drives on the other side of the road, but if the car is somthing strange and unusual...I'd like to bring it back with me :P

Not sure what you mean there Stalled. But there is general mobility of vehicles within Europe. There are a lot of LHD cars around here on mostly East European plates.

Provided you meet the rules in the country of registration there is no problem. Generally if you move to another euro country enventually you must re-register. This means going through the export/import/registration procedure.

I looked into that for here, if I've owned the car for three years or more there's no problem (apart from stacks of beaurocracy of course). If I haven't I'd have to pay import tax on their estimated value of the car (used cars here are at least twice as expensive as in the uk), and then the usual tax at 22%. Needless to say, I didn't bother.

It passed! Surprisingly enough, without any more things doing than what I said earlier. Total cost, though: £345 (inc. £50 for MOT)

What I had done:

Service (oil/filter changes)
New brake pads and disks for both front wheels (parts for these were £103 + VAT)
Labour for everything was £114

Have a few advisories on my MOT as well, that I would like clarification on. The mechanic said it was nothing urgent but would like a 2nd opinion.

Offside front anti-roll bar linkage has a slight play in a ball joint
Both rear brake disks slightly pitted (what does 'pitted' mean?)
Both rear tie bar/rods have slight play in ball joint
Offside front brake hose slightly deteriorated (this has been like that last year as well)

Seems I have a lot of play in the anti-roll bar area. Er.... expensive to do? Urgent? Can I do it myself (I am a 3-spanner Haynes mechanic)?

Thanks :cheesy:

The anti roll and tie bars are probably two spanners (couple of nuts each), there about £15 each. Only problem is if they are seized, or you round the allen/torx in the middle as i did. Probably best to do them all then have it 4 wheeled aligned.

Rear disks are easy but £60+

Front pipe shouldn't be hard, may aswell change the brake fluid while your there.

Having read quite a few posts on here criticising the hanbrake on 406's i must
be very lucky, where i live there are quite a few steep gradients and have never had
a problem with the handbrake, in fact during the mot when he did the the brake test
and pulled it on the wheels locked and the rollers pushed it off :D :D
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

To be fair, my handbrake is quite good but it has no feel to it. It has about 2 'notches' of travel and just rams the shoes solid on the drum. It takes a fair bit of forearm aswell.

A good handbrake should begin by binding the shoes lightly and then really nip harder if you apply more pressure and the lever should be light and progressive.

Mine is just on/off and feels more like two wooden blocks connected to a length of horse-hair :|

how do you tighten the hand brake? mine travels well over 3 clicks (about 8 in total) and unless i pull quite hard, it rolls on a hill, so I'm a bit worried now, as I've never owned a car with the hand brake on the rear wheels (last car was a Citroen Xantia) so not really sure whats considered "normal"

Also my rear drivers side wheel (RHD) rubs against the plastic shielding every time i go over a speed bump, will this fail the test also?

Anyone in the Northampton area with a drive who wouldn't mind me putting my car on it until i get this damn thing sorted give me a PM, i have limited funds at the moment and have a baby on the way, just don't need my car getting towed before its MOT;ed and taxed.

With all these problems i keep hearing about, looks like its going to be around mid november before i can get it MOTed and Taxed.
