Right engine mount

Dammit I'm pissed off

Paid £90 for a new right (top) engine mount bracket from the dealers because the bush was vibrating like mad, did 12 miles AND fitted it in my lunch break today, and guess what? It's STILL vibrating like mad!

At least it's improved things a little. If I'm careful and very gentle pulling off I don't get the nasty metal-on-metal vibrating sound, but ARGH £90! I had a look and the little bush in the rear bracket is cracked to hell but not moving much and the lampshade shaped mount doesn't look damaged, but is moving a fair bit.

I think I'll spend the £20 to replace the lampshade shaped part... The question is how do you remove/replace it? I can't tell how it's fixed to the body...

Also how tight should the joints through the bushes be? Should they be tight enough to restrict rotational movement or loose enough to let the joint bend?

Yeah my one of those is bad too, but last time I looked wasn't quite as bad as that one.

Part #183946 £27.95 inc vat according to the servicebox website. I was expecting it to be more expensive than that. Think I'll be on the blower to the stealers first thing in the morning!

yeah i think mine cost arround £20, it looked ok till i took it out, and its a bugger to get out

Piece of cake to get out... I've pulled the whole bracket out a few times before (attempts at the cambelt, then to put the unneeded new large arm on)

It's getting it back on that's fun. That engine's bloody heavy then comes the pushing, pulling and hammering to get the mounts lined up

After all this if it turns out to be the dome-shaped mount I'm going to scream!

BTW, how tight should the joints be? I've done them tight enough that I can't move them, but I dunno if there should be movement or not

It just took 22 minutes to replace the mount in your pic, including a few talking to colleagues (did it in the car park during lunch break). Not bad eh?

It's made a noticeable difference to how the car drives, but so did the last part of the mount I replaced. Only time will tell if it's the other bit I guess...

Still want to know how tight I should do the joints... :/

Phone call to the dealer tomorrow for a dome-shaped mount by any chance?

make sure its not loose, if its not, then make sure the welds havent failed and its partially ripped out , not uncommon unfortunatley
and it should be as tight as you can do it

welds in what, the bracket between the bit you took a picture of (todays replacement) and the bit that attaches to the engine (last week's)? Hmm might have a look at that at the weekend when i attack the thermostat (and dome-shaped mount if i can get one in time)

You mean on the BODY???

funnily enough my middle exhaust section's started blowing... guessing was probably caused by the engine banging about

sh*t. I ain't used a welder since I was about 13 and don't intend to start again on my precious. Guess this could be expensive Any idea just *how* expensive it's likely to be at £50/hr?

I'm starting to think I'm not going to get the car through its MOT in Feb... This mount needs sorting out as a priority before it destroys the car, then i need 5 tyres, tax, and whatever in the steering got me an advisory last time ("swivel joint" - wtf?)... Doubt I'm going to be able to afford it Might have to SORN it for a month or two

get it mot'ed now so you've got enough time to fix it
