Hi James,

Does the newer HDI units from PSA still have all the problems my current HDI does?

i like the 2.0L 136 HDi (after driving my dads 407 sw) it seems to have loads of power low down where mine is missing. I am not really looking into getting a car older than 2001 so that rules out the old diesels.

My dad's 407 on an 02 plate has done 65K miles with only the ball joints needing to be fixed (probably an expensive job)

What about Mercs and BMW's although i don;t think i will get one for the price i am looking at?

Not sure i want a diesels but if i get a petrol i am not to keen about the fuel consumption so this send me right back to the 407 HDi units. I have been told the PSA petrols are really good engines so maybe a 2.0L petrol 407 (but that maybe under powered)???

Basically i am looking at either : -

406 coupe 2.2L petrol
or 407 2.0L Petrol or HDi

Cannot think of any other cars i like

Passats are over priced and cost a bomb to get fixed
never liked the newish golfs

Renault's - has had loads of reliability issues

not keen on any citroens

that leaves fords or a cheap BMW.Merc or volvo

Why not get an 04 plate 406 HDi 110 Saloon 'S' then get it chipped to 140BHP.

It may well have, say, 80K on the clock but it would have been up and down motorways all day and it will be less than 4 years old, all for about £4.5K they have a nice interior too, and 16'' wheels, and sporty tail pipe :oops:

Have a look on 'Car Giant' in London, they always have a few.

I got offered £800.00 to trade mine in recently :cry: :cry: :cry:

I can't understand why Golf GTTDi's are still around £6K :x they are looking dated now but the 'perceived quality' keeps residuals artificially high :( as James said though, they are not there for the long haul with the stressed camshaft trying to works valves AND pump Diesel :roll:

The 2,0 HDI doesn't have that ghastly FAP thing either.

140bhp eh? Maybe I do need to go to the UK next year :?


Having said that, if I could find a mint 2,1 with extremely low miles I'd straight swap it and swallow the loss for reliablity gains.

Hi,

I think i looks like a 407 HDi 2.0L for around 7K with no more than 30K on the clock. If i need more power than the standard 136phb i can get it chipped upto 160bhp (+) but that will wear the clutch so i will probably not do that and leave it standard.

The coupe would be nice but the petrol will cost me to much in fuel and a good low millage 2.2HDI is like trying to find gold dust.

I may look at the 307's although i think the look a bit girl'y.

Erm. 407's didnt arrive till 04 plate. Has your dad got a 406 then?

Hmm yes could be an 04 i guessed (he has had it a few years, at least i think) don't tend to memories car registration plates that are not mine come to think of it i have no idea what my own cars reg is :).

all HDi's and all common rail diesels suffer the same problems, injectors, pumps clutches/flwheels and electrical faults

its not the manufacturer thats making them unreliable, its the fact that bosch, siemens and delphi (very late HDi's) fuel system parts are not up to the job, they are required to do such work they just dont last, diesel technology is advancing too fast and rail pressures are getting bloody stupid, our 406 HDi rail pressure peaks arround 1340bar, the very latest HDis are pushing over 2000 bar at the rail :shock: madness

i would avoid all merc's as they are as bad as fords, a BMW on your budget will be completley knackerd, and the ball joints on the 407 is a common problem, not too expensive to fix, almost all new HDi's have FAP but is now more reliable than before, even the very late 406 2.0 HDi 110 with the RHS engine has FAP :cry:

Hi,

James thanks for you advice. So if i was to get another HDi/common rail i should aim for a low mileage and look to sell it come 60-80K. Or the other option get a petrol and deal with the larger cost on fuel. Although i have no idea what power the 407 2.0L petrol is or what it's fuel consumption is.

What does FAP stand for.

Kind of off topic more research for a project :-

How many different common rail units are there?

PSA makes one is used i think by Citroen/Ford/possible fiat

VAG make there own and is used in VW/Audi

BMW makes there own ??

Merc make there own??

Honda make there own??

ALso fo the companies like ford that buy in PSA hdi units is the only difference between them the size of turbo they choses to put on them and/or the set up they go for??

Yep, D8 2.1TD exec is the one to go for 8)

Reliable as a wood burning stove, no stupid DMFs or BSIs, faster... possibly a little less economical (I do 45mpg with my driving) and rattly. Shame they are getting old now....

That's the second time in as many days that someone's said the 2,1 is rattly, mine has 218kkm but only rattles as much as I'd expect from a diesel, it's nowhere near as loud as my 2,0 HDI either!

spot on, also called PEF or Particulate Emission Filter

as for diesel engines, PSA units are in some Fiats though these are mostly GM diesel engines, they also are now appearing in the new BMW mini, the 2.0 and 1.6 engines are also in the volvo S40 and V50, and also i think a suzuki 4x4, VAG engines are in Seat's, Audi, VW's and Skoda's
the BMW engines are made by BMW alone, but have appeard in the rover 75 and MG equivalent
Mercedes diesel engines are also GM units and as a result are pure crap, try driving a S320 CDi and you'll see why,
as for the PSA units in other vehicles, they remain untouched as they are so well engineerd, the only exception is obviously in other vehicles the quality of the wiring is of a higher standard
