Loss of power on my HDI (90)
Hello to all,
I am new to this forum and have just purchased a W reg 406 HDI 90 estate.
There are a few things that need sorting to get it to the standard i want but there is one major problem that needs diagnosing a.s.a.p.
There is a severe lack of power to the 406, almost tothe fact that it's difficult to drive up steep hills.
It feels like the turboisn't kicking in but if you rev the engine from the engine bay you can just about here it whistle. I drove 150 miles in it when i collected it but on a flat piece of road i could not go any faster than 75-80 mph! I have checked through some previous topics but cant seem to find anyone who has had this prob before. I was thinkin maybe the LP pump, dud turbo or even knackered injectors. The feul consumption is no where near what it should be either as during the 150 mile drive home i only averaged 29 mpg?????
Also the feul gage doesn't seem to be working......put £30 of Diesel in and the gauge has hardly moved!
Just hoping for a bit of a point in the right direction?

hi when you rev the car wot do they go up to if only 3000rpm it is in save mode try disconecting the ecu overnight and see wot it does

Hi, the 406 has a big fuel tank (70L + filler) I wouldn't expect £30 to move it much, especially if it was a long way into the red.Jenksbaj wrote:Also the feul gage doesn't seem to be working......put £30 of Diesel in and the gauge has hardly moved!
I'd check that the air filter isn't clogged and probably replace it and the fuel filter as a first step. Also check your tyre pressures.

Hi and thanks for the advice.
Just changed the fuel filter and the air filter was pretty clean with no blockages as such but it hasn't made a difference at all! any other idea what else it could be.........

well seeing as you just purchased it i would say its not lost any power, a 90 estate has performance on par with an iceberg
and the fuel economy sounds about right to me

Trust me, it's down on power.
I had LDV mini buses overtaking me on hills on my drive home in it and believe you me i tried my best to keep ahead of them!!! I'm talking 0-60 lucky to be under 25 seconds!
I know people who have had 406's including esates and they easily managed 40 MPG around town.........

I'm pleasing more or less ignorance of these nasty diesel things but maybe it's something daft like a siezed calliper.
Failing that, I reckon some proper diagnostics are in order - NOT PUG!

Good thinking but i've checked all the wheels spin freely and there all fine. It's as if the turbo doesn't kick in properly! How much does it cost roughly to put the 406 on the diagnostics at Pug?

In the UK.
Still haven't resolved the prob either. Spoke to a mechanic the other day and he said the 406 HDI engines are proned for getting tired and losing power. He also said it wouldn't be the turbo because if that had gone the car would be belching out smoke! Has anyone else experienced the problems i'm having. Still cantget it over 75 > 80 mph ona flatroad and i reckon it would take at least 25 seconds toget to 60 from stilll and thats flogging the arse off it!

The 90 will be slower than the 110 obviously but it shouldn't be that slow!
Sounds like the turbo wastegate is open. I shouldn't worry about turbo failure as this never seems to happen.
Could be the Vac Pump, turbo Vacuum solenoid valve, leaking vacuum line, that sort of thing.
Can't be more specific I'm affraid but hopefully something simple. Would be worth an ECU code read?

Where abouts is the turbo wastegate? is there an actuator on it, same as a petrol turbo?

hi did the person who you got it from say he had just had any work done on it or has the just cambelt been done could it be a tooth out on the top pully wood still run but wood be dead also have you tred a cleaner through it if it has never been thrashed it wood be all carbined up if the mpg is that bad there must be some smoke from it
have you checked the oil in it since you got it in cace they put far to much in it that could cause lag in the engine
wot sought of miles have it done has it ever had a cat done on it
