Hpi running running sluggish and misfires... read on !

Post by Black Pearl »

adoo all HPI owners,

ya might of already had dealings with misfires and running sluggish, well mine has been of late and i couldnt put up with it no more so i asked me local stealer to figure out why, they returned to me to say that my thinking of it being the sparkplugs or the coilpack was wrong, it was in fact the EGR valve, a crappy unit thats designed to put small amounts of exhaust gasses back into the mix of the engine to cut carbon emissions, as with all cars they coke up with the carbon and seize, ( experienced in the past with a 2.0 litre frontera ) due to the carbon build up, but mine went 1 step further and cracked the actuator arm for the cam ring to pull the mushroom valve in and out, luckily it was seized in the closed position. Also ive shopped around for one of these EGR's specific for HPI engines, ya can guess it done no good as theyre main stealer parts only. came to a cost of 140 quid.

Hope this helps folk out with the mystery of running a bit crappy, if ya need more info let me know, ill help as much as i can

Good news Pearl, glad you got it sorted. 8) Had my EGR replaced last year after a burst of the "Anti-pollution fault" syndrome. Unfortunately it didn't help with my occasional splutter.

Im truly overwhelmed with such comradery shown by DaiRees, He is right though, last time i looked ( no doubt changed by now ) out of 4000 or so 406 owners on this forum theres only 2 who own HPI's Be it DaiRees and myself, Kind of assuring to know at least there is some"one" out there who may have experienced little troubles, characteristics and other such suprises our engines chuck at us from time to time. Unlike the HDI, EW10's, and XU's we have to struggle to find a means to an end of our engine troubles through trial and error, cost and time ( mostly cost and time ).

We gotta stick together, as some of the more " common " engnined folk :P just wont understand what its like to drive your car into a garage and get told by the mechanic " bloody hells this then mate ? " nerves and wallets of steel are basic fundamentals you need to drive a HPI. And when you get questioned by some nosey " thinks he know it all " at the petrol station asks me why im filling up my Diesel with unleaded. ** leaves muttering, where the bloody hell did i put me scatter gun **

we'll show em DaiRees lol 8)

There's lots of 'rare' 406s unfortunately. There's the tubby (2.0 8v turbo), the 2.2 SRi, the V6, and I think there's 1.6s around too (but I don't think they sold them in the UK). Best bet is to get familiar with servicebox :/

They have 1.6s here, and you think an HDi 90 is slow...
mjb wrote:Best bet is to get familiar with servicebox :/
So they get an idea how much it's gonna cost if it all goes bang? For diagnosing faults service box is as much use as a dying duck in a thunderstorm. I have a feeling these are not the only cars running this sort of set up, worth checking out other forums? Incidently, I was reading the other day that a coil pack firing two cylinders has a tendency to eat one of the spark plugs. Not sure if this is applicable but...

Elitists my arse !!! more like afraid to join the brigade of real men ,the HDI owners  .
Men who despite never knowing if they are going to get to their destination still carry on ,Men
who are not afraid to roll their shirt sleeves up and get stuck into their hdi at the side of the
road to ensure they get there , Men who because of this have intimate knowledge of their hdi's
and are prepared to pass this on to the lesser mortals on this forum,Men who have bottomless
pockets . Men who are on first name terms with their local stealers ,Men who have spirit and
spunk the kind this country was built on :cheesy: :cheesy:

not mamby pamby reliable hpi owners :P :P

As someone who's not seen as many engine bays as James, I've found it (and unofficial previous offerings) utterly invaluable for identifying what things are, where things should be, and what they should look like under all the crud.

No it's not a manual, but it does provide details of component assemblies and the best circuit diagrams I've seen for the 406.
