406 v6 automatic wont engage drive

Post by lorus5000 »

hi all, im new to the site, so please bear with me.
ok ive just bought a 406 estate v6 auto for spairs and repairs.
the only prob with the car is that when i put the car into drive, either 1,2,3 or reverse it wont engage.
but........... sometimes it manages to engage momentarily? :?:

I am thinking that its either the clutch or the auto gearbox is dead. :|

the reason i ask is that it would be a shame to cannibalise the v6 if the fault is a cheap one to repair, at the mo im driving a 1.8 glx estate which is fine........ and i dont mind putting the leather interior into that along with the better panels bonnet and tailgate...

thanks for your time and hope to hear from you soon...

The peugeot auto boxes are weak however a fluid change may help but I wouldn't bank on it. If not you should be able to convert the V6 to a manual but I can't tell you 'how to' I'm affraid

Back in the day the valve blocks (rather usefully situated the bottom of the box) used to sludge up so it might be worth a fluid change, although if the fluid smells burned then it's probably scrap metal. As Welton says, there's always converting it to manual but that would rather depend on the state of the car, if it's bright and shiney then maybe. Unfortunatly it ain't as simple as it used to be, the auto box ecu will be linked to the engine management etc. and you'll need the box of course, plus drive shafts, flywheel, de-bla de-bla de-bla. You could always get another donor car :cheesy:

wont be a valve block on the AL4, they dont suffer with pressure regulation faults, just electronic problems, or complete box failure (very commom)
and as for converting to manual, dont even go there
