Hi there, it's me again. My home pc is sporting Bill Gates' bum hole on the task bar and keeps telling me something about software fraud. No sh!t Sherlock, I've never paid for anything Microsoft. SO, I looked about on the 'net and discover that I'm a thieving scumbag who should be ashamed and I should count myself lucky I've gotten away with it for so long. So I briefly considered actually buying Windows, unti I saw how much it costs...

The thing is, computers are pretty much universal and everyone is getting one and going online all across the world. An operating system is the most basic (ha) thing you need (apart from hardware of course) so why the hell are Microsoft so bluddy greedy with it? Why can't they sell it at minimal cost and then make their money on everything else once people are using their computers? Why do they need to keep making themselves even richer??

So once again I'm thinking about Linux. Hey, it's free and no-one cares if I don't pay for it! Best of all, it aint Microsoft!! But I've been spoilt by Windows because even a completely computer illiterate twit like me can use it, so when I look at the installation instructions for Linux I start to panic. This partition, that partition, what the faaaaaaark! I look on the Linux forums for some sort of clue but the usual newbie is someone who knows about computers already. If anyone pipes up and says "I don't know Jack" they generally get ignored.

But this time I'm tryng not to be put off, I have a 30 gig HDD that's going spare and I'm going to rip out all my other disk drives and try and jam Fedora on it. Sh!t, what's the worst thing that could happen?

You could downgrade to Win2000, that doesn't need activating. What are you on, XP home or Pro?

Go on stick linux on it.

Its as easy (if not easier) to install than Windows and comes with a load of apps.

Its pretty easy to use but is different to windows so take a bit of time before you feel comfortable with it. If you just browse the net and do other computer type things (letters, email etc) shouldn't take long to learn.

After installing wandows 1,000 times I know it's pretty easy, shove in the disk, say yes a couple of times, walk away. If Linux is even easier does that mean I don't even have to put the dvd the drive?

I was doing IT and business, the IT part was fascinating and I got on well with it, the second term we were playing with C++ and, while the rest of the class had their machines counting numbers, my screen was flashing different colours, drawing geometric shapes and all sorts of weird stuff

I think you left off the bit where I said I junked the course because the business side was doing my head in.

What about all the stuff posted on here wrt programming etc.? np. did you get any of this? Is it all cristal clear, or meaningless jargon? It means nothing to me (ah Vienna). Ok, I can run dos commands but that's about it and dos won't get me anywhere with Linux because it's based on Unix.

Anyway, would you call someone who can change a tyre a master mechanic? Or someone who can change a bulb an electrician? Or even someone who couldn't bring themself to kill a fly a humanitarian? I didn't think so.

It's not the activation, he's running corporate. It's the genuine advantage warnings that pop up if the key is blacklisted.

I am running corporate as well on my parents' PCs. But you need a cracked DLL file (LegitChecker.dll or something) and a key generator, which will generate a unique one so it won't be "blocked". And then you "legalise" Windows by going to Windows Update and installing the genuine advantage thing.

I got sp2 from micro$oft, installed that and it's been fine 'til now. Didn't know about the .dll file tho. Nice to see that my virus checkers and anti-spyware programs are now saying the key generators are visuses, I wonder who made that happen. I did try my own solution, which did seem to have worked for a while but my pc now seems to have got 7 new updates from windows update and I have a feeling that one the is the bumhole of doom.

Speaking of updates, go to your \windows directory and count how many uninstall folders you have - not very tidy!

Anyway, I really want to try Linux. As I'm not downloading at home now I can mess about to my heart's content. I have installed Fedora but I seem to have done it a different way from everyone else and, as the install didn't call for it, I don't actually have a user account for my own machine Still, the natives have been very friendly and I have a solution to try.

Btw when I was looking about for a solution to wga on all the forums I looked at if anyone started explaining a way around wga the moderators jumped on them - "you can't do that!"

I've been using the Devilsown xp pro corp edition with a keygen since a couple of weeks before XP was released, and never had any problem with it - unlike the couple of legit installs I have which are forever telling me I'm a dirty tea leaf. Hmm something wrong there.

If you want to try linux, I'd suggest grabbing Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/ - it's very noobie friendly.

Well, I sorted myself out a user account, all I need to do now is connect to my DSL and everything should be ok. All I need to do, how on earth do I do it?? Anyway, I've just booted Windoors at home but no sign of the expected bumhole of doom. And my secret? How did I get rid of the wga warnings so I could still download updates but avoid the sphincter of dispare?

Probably just a case of 'dhclient eth0'

I have no idea how to do it via a gui way or (without having a quick play) how to get it to do it on bootup, other than the hacky rc.local method - every stupid linux distro does it all different sodding way.
