The Budget - Car Tax Changes!

Post by DaiRees »

Well I'm thoroughly pissed off with it!

As most of you know, my family / work / daily car is a 2002 Peugeot 406 estate fitted with the 2.0l HPi direct injection petrol engine, which I've had for nearly 6 years. I searched long and hard for one with this engine (and paid a premium for it!) because it's supposedly slighly more powerful, slightly more economical and slightly cleaner than the standard 2.0l 16V lump, emitting 185g/km CO2 instead of 200g/km. As a result it just snuck intothe top of the existing band E (166-185) so I've been paying around £40 less than my non HPi driving peers, this year it'll be £170. Under the new system however, it'll fall into the bottom end of band J (181-200), so the standard 2.0l will pay exactly the same tax, in 2009 that'll be £260, a £90 increase for me! It's effectively gone up 2 bands!!!!

I know times change and all that but just a few years ago this car was considered to be a "class leader" in emission control. And had it been registered 10 months earlier the tax would only be £185  WTF???

Oh dear, two days without anyone mentioning the B word  (No mention of the 2p on fuel tho...)

Hey, afaik I never benefited in any way from any budget, often it seemed like they were targetted at me personally.

You think thats bad, if mine was registered 6 months LATER, instead of £185 I would only pay £115 now or £120 in 2009 :x

When did this banding system come into play in the first place then? was it around 2002?

Every car I've had for the last few years has been the old £96.00 for 6 months or £175.00? for 12 months which I suppose this is the highest rate? I only ever pay 6 months at a time

I feel sorry for people on a budget because they can only afford to run old shitters which polute more so get hammered with road tax which they can ill-afford and yet they probably only do 5000 miles or so a year so are more likely poluting LESS in real terms :?

Hold on - that's it! I've had an idea! Pay-as-you-drive 8)

It's only for cars registered after 01/03/2001, before that it's just under 1600cc or over 1600cc. You can find the tax band for any car here. http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPor ... le+Enquiry
If your car is pre 2001 just find the reg No. of an identical post 2000 car and you can find out the difference.

Yeah but it wouldn't be 113.9p if it wasn't for the exortionate duty on it.... Between fuel duty and VAT, about 65% of what we pay at the pumps is tax   . Cost to the seller is approx 30% and profit is approx 5% :?

I do agree, fuel has gone up over 20 pence per litre in the last year or so, the mind truly boggles
Diesel always use to be cheaper than petrol too! Now it's 6 or 7 pence dearer!

Sorry to drag up this old fred, but I felt compelled to share with you, my dear fellow pug sufferers, the fact that in amongst all the other shyte that that weasily little tosser Darling announced today in his "pre-budget" pre-ejaculation, there is some relatively good news, specifically that they've seen sense and overturned the ludicrous bollox talked earlier in the year about VED which resulted in the rather eloquent and well though out rant above.

My tax is no longer set to skyrocket. :P

I'd more or less decided to keep my car for a bit longer anyway but this news seals the deal. 8)

More here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ow ... /DG_172916

MIND YOU..... What's all that rubbish about 2.5% off VAT to encourage spending? Yeah right, someone who might not have a job next week is gonna rush out and spend all their cash on the High Street now just because something's gone down 2.5p in the pound aren't they? You f*cking dolt Darling! (I bet most retailers don't lower prices anyway, they'll just increase their own profits)..... and he's increased duty on fuel, booze and cigs to "compensate" for the VAT cut, so the price of them won't change at all anyway....

But if we all pay more in road tax then they'll be able to fix all the pot-holes in the roads won't they?
