What to do about cars?

Post by DaiRees »

OK dudes....

I'm coming under increasing pressure from the Mrs to change the car. Never mind that I'm currently driving the nicest, most comfortable car I've ever owned and that it's only done a handful of miles and has been very well looked after, but I've had it nearly 6 years now and the wife thinks we need to change, she's mentioned getting a new car and now I've started thinking about it so that's the start of a slippery slope :? . The only thing I will say is that I've been considering a diesel since I'm using it for work and doing alot more miles these days. I've always had to have the "main" family car, but it struck me the other day that SWMBO's Fucus is more than capable of draging the tribe around fairly economically and in relative comfort, and when we need it to go on hols we could just get a roof box :D

So the dilema is a huge one! There are essentially 4 options.
1, Forget it!
2, Buy a diesel that's a few years old, of course it would have to meet my exacting standards of trim and spec, but possibly a smaller car or maybe even a 406 HDi coop 8)
3, Sell my car and my Zook and get a more civilised 4X4 that could be used for work and fun.... maybe a mid - late 90s SWB pajero :o (Yes I know the economy is poor but for a couple of grand I wouldn't think twice about running it on 50% veggie oil).
4, Sell some more body parts and get another nearly new family car :| (I really don't want to be spending much more than 10K plus my car, which Parkers tells me is worth about 2.5K  )

I'm favouring option 2, well that's not strictly true, I'm really favouring option 1  but never mind that now, let's discuss option 2. Fairly flexible budget here but let's say an absolute maximum of my car plus 5K. The problem with that is I'd be selling my car and getting someting a couple of years newer, but almost certainly with lots more miles and someone else's problems, I'd find it hard to part with my hard-earned under those circumstances :frown: .

Option 3 is really a non starter, the economy would piss me off even if it is running veggie, plus I'd be forever scared of breaking it on a Sunday knowing I need it for work on the Monday.

The wife's favorite is option 4, the problem there being that there is absolutely nothing that I want out there. The only car at the moment that even remotely tickles my fancy is the New Mondeo, but with the spec I want we're looking at £23K+... and they aren't old enough or plentiful enough just yet to be picking up the 1 year old / less than 10Kmiles nearly new bargains. However my searches on the internet have turned up a variety of previous shaped mondeos with cracking spec for pretty sensible money. I never liked the styling of that model but I just keep remembering Clarkson's quote of "Every time I drive one of these things I wonder why we ever buy anything else" :? . How about this one for example? That's the 155PS version :P , full leather, climate, cruise, 9K miles, low emissions so cheap tax, claimed combined mpg of 48... More than 10 grand off the new price

I'd be interested in your opinions guys, what would you do.

Option 1 - Thats the easy option, theres nowt worse than trudging around car dealers forecourts. Well i hate it anyway.
Option 2 - Thats what ive just done. I went out and found a car with a really high spec (just like the 406) but with a diesel engine and mega low miles and over 3 years old so most of the depreciation as been soaked up by the previous owner 8)
So thats what i would do.
Option 3 - Dont know much about 4x4 so cant really comment. But im guessing its an expensive game?
Option 4 - Well i wouldnt spend 10 grand on a car again its just to much money to loose in my mind. Look hard enough you will find a car just as good for half the price.

But its your decision...... :cheesy:

there really is no point changing cars, the 406 suits your needs, and hasnt let you down or cost the earth to maintain, so why change???
what will you gain, a newer car which maybe more economical, certainly less reliable, and with most modern cars made to last 3 years then fall to bits, its an expensive choice that you can really do without, in my opinion the 406 is one of most reliable newish (up to 2004) cars you can buy, as the recipe hasnt really changed since 1995

What about option 5:

Talk none stop about all the different cars you could get and all the pro's, con's, technical details, make the misses sit down and look at parker's and autotrader for hours. Don't talk to her about anything but a new car. She soon get fed up and say you should keep your current car, especially if you make her think you want a new one!

Can't you flog the wife instead? Replacing a decent car just because it's old is nuts, every time I've ever bought another car ownership always starts with finding what I missed when I looked at it & sorting out all the stupid faults, only to flog it when I absolutely have to, and buying another mystery. It's just not something I'd volunteer for, especially if it cost a fortune to start off with (gazes out window at D9 and wonders where he can buy a bazooka)

Btw 4x4s are expensive and pointless if you can't make use of them, plus almost everyone hates them and the chancellor sees them as a target. It's probably heresy but I think I'd go for an mpv. That's if your wife manages to find her way home again...

Ah but I do make use of mine, albeit recreational use. You're right about the rest of it though!

And you're all right that changing the car is madness. Still interesting comments so far, keep 'em coming! :D

I agree if your happy with a car you shouldn't change it. Should only change a car if your really bored, have a load of cash to waste or think its likely the new car will have less (serious) problems than your current one.

The thing here though is that you wouldn't dare take a specced up SUV offroad, and if you did you wouldn't enjoy it! Likewise if you got a vehicle that's capable of being thrown around offroad, you wouldn't want to drive it as a daily cruiser...

I reckon you're best off sticking with the '6 or at the very worst grabbing a coop or a cheap '7. Why spend money if you don't have to though?

This is very intresting!

I'm in a similar dilema - I really like my 406, it's like a cumfy old shoe BUT everyone else views 406's nowadays as old fashioned. It's a shame because the 406's are often overlooked and underated by the motoring public which has hit our prices hard.

In your situation Dai I would look towards a 407 - they are bang upto date with the styling, the ride and handling is reported as being superb and prices are very good! you could get a cracker for £8k and keep the Zooky

Spot on mjb, the best way to do it is two cars, one for day-to-day and another for your enviromentally unsound mud fetish :P :P Oh, that's what you have now...

Welly has got a point ,if you must change i agree a move to a 7 would be sensible , lot of
car for not a huge outlay. You also get to keep your off road toy :P .

Or you could keep the 6 and buy a more powerful off roader  and beat the wife
if she mentions it again

Oh by the way if you stick to peugeot we get to carry on enjoying your witty and informative posts :P
(yes i know that last comment was yuk but it doesn't hurt to score brownie points :cheesy: :cheesy: )

I ain't keen on the '7 SW. Thing is, I reckon that if I'm driving an estate the load area should be big enough to house several homeless families, and the boot of the '7 just aint that big :frown:
