Jack the front end up and have a good wiggle to see what's moving?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: play in steering
If you mean the track rod then Haynes says it's possible but you need a special tool.

Re: play in steering
the track rod is the ball joint on the end, that the hub sits on, the steering rod (the part you are on about) is a threaded rod which screws into the rack, but has a ball joint at the rack end, if its worn you get left - to - right play in the wheels

Re: play in steering
's funny, I always assumed the track rod end (the bit on the hub end with the balljoint and the thread you wind in and out to adjust the toe settings) would be on the track rod and it's what I looked up in Haynes. Haynes has no mention of a "track arm" with regard to the steering rack (it does on the rear suspension), I thought that was more to do with worm and roller/nut set ups anyway. Unles it's a track control, erm, rod of course. I can't find anything about a steering arm tho, maybe I should stick to lawnmowers

Re: play in steering
its in the haynes its referred to as the track rod and the track rod end is the bit with the ball joint that fixed to the hub, people refer to these in different terms ie track rod end or tie rod end etc just different names for the same component
