What to replace my 406 with?

I want a nice rusty tractor so I can drive along at 15kmh on cheap fuel collecting a line of cars while spraying mud everywhere and indicating left all the time.

Re: the 407 - I have read somewhere that the rear seat is a pretty grim place to be with poor visability and a claustrophobic feel? if this is true then it's a bad thing for a family car

As stated previous not a fan of the 407 and yes you are right there welly far nicer to sit in the back of a 406 . Have been doing a bit of research and i think im swaying towards a honda accord diesel the exec model had a look on auto trader. Look very nice inside the reviews read very well also. I think i need to get a test drive and go from there hopefull i can one for a full day to get a true comparrison to the 406 will keep you all posted how much should i be asking for my 406?

Yes still got it, happy with the car, I've got the 2.2HDi, as I do about 17k a year and a 3.0 V6 would cripple me. It's got Peugeot electrics so I often get random messages come up on the screen.

I found the handling very poor not your typical peugeot chasis which everyone seems to report. The only problem i had with mine which was not electrical yes not electrical. But it was a D8 not D9 Was the gear box at 45,000 miles up untill then trouble free motoring. Some how it got stuck in reverse. And would not engage any other gear. Gearbox was sent to a specialist who said the gearbox was not up to the job as it was a 2.0 box. I just felt a bit cheated i payed nearly 30k for a car that was built with alot of compromises. Still wish i had opted for the bmw 330ci clubsport now love the look of the 406 coupe interior and that V6 roar but thats it. Bmw is superior in lots of ways.

Found something very alarming honda accord diesel drinks oil a litre every 3000 miles I have been reading one guy who's engine seized due to not topping up his oil. The car was less than a year old. I never have topped the oil up in my 406 and it covers 12,000 miles before an oil change.What is the reason? As i thought that was a sign of a worn engine. All i get on the dash one oil square dissapears just before its due a service and thats it. So i would say mine uses less than half a litre every 12,000 miles.

Ditto - my HDi never uses a drop!

Some Diesels do drink oil - the VAG engines at one stage came out the factory with fully synthetic oil which stopped the engine actually running-in, consquently they spend the rest of their time using 1 litre every 1000 miles

I wasn't aware of the Honda using oil but I will say that if a sales rep does the 100MPH 'train' on the motorway all day every day then a diesel engine will use oil because it will be sitting in it's upper rev band. My service manager friend at a Peugeot Dealer said that even the HDi will use oil if driven like this.

That Honda Diesel is a fancy engine - it doesn't have a head gasket it's an enclosed head and part of the whole block assembly.

have to be honest and say ive never sat in the back of my car but my 11 year-old says he can see out of the side windows no problem and even between the seats to see out of the windscreen, he can also sit behind passenger seat and see all my dials with ease and behind drivers seat with plenty of space although he says not quie as much as the 406(but in defence of my car he has grown about a foot since he last sat in a 406)

As far as I know it's all good - it does'nt have a Cambelt either, it is chain driven.

Interesting... Wonder how reliable it all is in real terms. Although, I don't really doubt the Japanese did a good job. Chains still need replacing, though, right?

Not really, after about 160000 miles they can go a bit slack and start making a noise and if it gets really bad it can get thrown off the sprockets but by and large they are fit and forget.

Well welly now you say that i can see your point about it using oil even a hdi if driven at high speeds day in day out. With regards to the engine having no rubber belt and a chain it all sounds good to me. Im warming to the honda i think i need to drive one. If i buy one carry a litre of oil with me

I may be sticking with peugeot after all My friend is selling his 407 2.0 hdi SE on a 54 plate and is giving me first refusal. What is it worth? Its a saloon he is the second owner its only covered 20,000 miles and is in mint condition. He is offering to let me borrow it for a weekend. To see if i can be swayed towards it i think its worth a look at. Trem what would you say? He always rates it but im not sure still thinking honda

Hi,rapport if youve got the chance of a free weekend with it i would but remember its 136bhp and yours is 150 so it may not feel as quick dunno what part of uk you in but i would get a mix of roads both motorway and country roads dont forget 6th gear on the motorway and on the country lanes try and trust it cos it will go round that corner. ive added a post from xplosive who was in your situation about a month ago and this is what he bought remarkably similar try pm him see what he thinks now. if its been drive like a grandads car it may feel sluggish but give it some welly and itll soon clear out,there used to be a member called blue407 who had his remapped up to about 175bhp ish i think but he dont seem to be around anymore hope this helps abit


Decided to part exchange the 406 for a 407. Does the following sound like a good deal or not?

Part exchange for my Peugeot 406 GLX HDi (110) with sat nav 85K on the clock = £2,000 on a 51 plate.

And the newer car is a Peugeot 407 2.0 HDi (136bhp) SE saloon with 21K on the clock on a 54 plate so after part exchange the new car would be £5,500 with years road tax, MOT service and 1yr Peugeot warranty and only had one owner. I will probaly end up getting two free front tyres as they will fail the MOT

Is there any known faults i should be looking for ? (i already know about the ball joints – need changing ever 40K)
