Has anyone heard of any high speed deaths form these snapping springs?

Its does make me think how lucky it was that it was parked outside and stationary

Could have been a bit dodgey at speed. :(

Strangely enough, no. Honest John: "Reports of front coil springs breaking usually during low speed manoeuvres (seems confined to 1997-1999 cars). " Ahh, sorry John, it's D9s too :(

The update is I have fitted the complete coil and damper recieved from an ebay scappy. It is in better conndition than the one original.

Bit of a pig to fit lost a bit of gearbox oil and need a new top link to anti roll bar but nothing much else. Local peugeot dealer had all nuts and bolts and ordering the top link.

I examined the failed spring in more detail and this is my deduction. The lower part of the damper that holds the spring gets filled wih road mud (even the repalcement had a bit) this causes the 5 inches of sleeved spring to corrode and hence snap. If you look at the break there is a brown stain at the top of the spring circumference. This causes the fatigue and hence the break :(

When the other bits arrive on Tuesday I can finish off and refill the gearbox.

I would say this is not a job for the faint hearted.

Mine snapped almost half way up the thing - but similarly in a place where the spring coating had come away.

My advice would be a good clean up and grease/waxoil or something to repel water etc.

The passenger coil went on my saloon after about £160k and 7 years. I think I paid about £70 odd, supplied and fitted.

Is this an ever increasing peugeot common fault also?

Is that gold ingots? Next time, spread the load around the car :P

The D8s were known for it but the D9s seem to be doing it too. It does seem more common tho, global warming?

Well all fitted and test driven today :)

What a voyage of discovery. I will be soaking the lower carriers in WD40 and wax oil to add some protection sson.

Next job is the brake flexible pipes discs and rear shoes, may have a new car by then :o

Well it seems pretty conclusive that these springs snap at 120-130k ish on 7-9 year old cars at low speeds with rust fatigue as the primary cause.

Bit late for a recall I fear but I guess Peugeot are not bothered once the car becomes a 3rd or 4th owners problem.

I will keep an I on my other spring and use plenty of oil to stave of the corrosion :)

I hope this is the end of it for me but you never know!!

Well blow me down with a feather if the other spring has gone bang

Big bang what a bast**d!!! and only 2 weeks apart at 123k miles

Oh well at least I know how to fix it. Good job it didn't happen on the 400 mile round trip to Oxford I made on Saturday otherwise I may not be here to tell the tale.
I have ordered a complete leg from the same online ebay scrappy so that and the Peugeot bits I have to get this week I should be set for the weekend.

Will keep you all posted :)

Guess it's the same as a lot of things that work in pairs - if one goes then the other will soon fail under the extra load
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
