oil change advice

i have a hdi 90

Would i be better off using my sump pump to suck all the oil out at 5000 miles, and replacing with new, then at 10000 miles draining the oil and changing the filters

Or should i just stick to doing it every 10000 properly

The reason Im thinking of using the sucker is my sump tray is a total arse, its all smashed up and help on with a selection of cable ties!

Also is it better to use cheaper oil and change it twice as often or buy the more expensive stuff and do it at normal intervals

That last one sounds like false economy to me. Regular intervals, decent but not necessarily overpriced oil.

With the sump sucker everyone's concerned with leaving sludge behind but I think most garages are doing it this way these days, my brother was surprised I was still doing it the old fashioned messy way. I'm told modern oils shouldn't leave much sludge behind either.

Anyway, unless your car's done 300,000 miles and the oil's getting rapidly contaminated with combustion crud it's not really worth playing with the intervals.

When you say held on with cable ties does this mean
no bolts and are there any leaks ??

When i say sump tray i dont think i made myself clear, i mean the big flappy bit of plastic that keeps all of the road grime out, over time this has become damaged and needs to be help on with ties

I Just change it at the recomended 12000 miles for a HDi by the "normal" method using 10/40 semi synthetic.
One of mine has the under tray missing so maybee leave it off?

always did mine every 5k (~2 months ) with so so semi.

What you could do is do the full change at 10k, draining via sump. Then change at 5k via sucker. that way you'll get any sludge out reasonably frequently but not have the hassle getting to the sump bolt.

personally i think draining via the sump and giving a good hour to drain is alot better than the sucker! my oil stayed clean for 2 or 3k, even on a 150k+ engine!

Ahhh the engine bay undertray. That's usually held on with zip ties and my new car's will also join the zip tie club as soon as I need to take the tray off for anything. The problem is being under the car the bolts holding it on get exposed to the worst conditions and consequently corrode. It's honestly a hell of a lot easier to just tie it on than faff with the bolts
