If it's a sh1tty hard drive controller it won't be using DMA for drive access.mjb wrote:Nah, lack of memory would cain the disk, not the cputeamster1975 wrote:You're pretty low on available memory Welly; I reckon that's your problem!

Re: Old fashioned elbow grease...
i would be pretty shocked if it wasn't using dma! been pretty standard for years...
Medion stuff is normally not too bad. If you can wangle some extra memory its probably worth it, or you could get the comp guy to remove all the stuff running in the background thats not needed, probably give you as much off a performance gain as extra memory
Personally i'd not be using IE, but there again i have problems on my work laptop with firefox and the animated adverts when you log off yahoo mail!

A computer dummy says: Low ram means the memory controller has to shuffle stuff between the ram and the hdd all the time, ok it doesn't slow the cpu much but processes take longer because of all the disk thrashing and things can almost crawl to a halt if there's too much going on. (I also read somehere all the animations etc. on all the open web pages in the browser still use up recources even if you're not looking at them)
Get some more ram young Welly, an increase in ram always gives a better speed increase than a faster processor.

Is that a hint there Matt
The banners are a pain because they take ages to load sometimes!

Re: Old fashioned elbow grease...
It's cos it uses more memory to render the page with all the animations Welly. The lag in your typing is because it's using the hard drive as virtual memory when it runs out of free RAM. Have you got skype on your work PC?

Ah well if you've got skype there's a free add-on that lets you take remote control of anyone elses computer that's using skype. Get it setup again when you're back from hols and I'll give the computer a check over
